وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ سَبْعَ بَقَرَاتٍ سِمَانٍ يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌ وَسَبْعَ سُنبُلَاتٍ خُضْرٍ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَاتٍ ۖ يَا أَيُّهَا الْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِي فِي رُؤْيَايَ إِن كُنتُمْ لِلرُّؤْيَا تَعْبُرُونَ ٤٣
And the king (of Egypt) said: "Verily, I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows, whom seven lean ones were devouring - and of seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry. O notables! Explain to me my dream, if it be that you can interpret dreams."
- وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ
- And the king (of Egypt) said:
- إِنِّي أَرَىٰ سَبْعَ بَقَرَاتٍ سِمَانٍ
- Verily, I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows,
- يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌ
- whom seven lean ones were devouring -
- وَسَبْعَ سُنبُلَاتٍ خُضْرٍ
- and of seven green ears of corn,
- وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَاتٍ ۖ
- and (seven) others dry.
- يَا أَيُّهَا الْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِي
- O notables!
- فِي رُؤْيَايَ إِن
- Explain to me my dream,
- كُنتُمْ لِلرُّؤْيَا تَعْبُرُونَ
- if it be that you can interpret dreams.
قَالُوا أَضْغَاثُ أَحْلَامٍ ۖ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَأْوِيلِ الْأَحْلَامِ بِعَالِمِينَ ٤٤
They said: "Mixed up false dreams and we are not skilled in the interpretation of dreams."
- قَالُوا
- They said:
- أَضْغَاثُ أَحْلَامٍ ۖ
- Mixed up false dreams
- وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَأْوِيلِ الْأَحْلَامِ
- and we are not skilled in the interpretation of dreams.
- بِعَالِمِينَ
وَقَالَ الَّذِي نَجَا مِنْهُمَا وَادَّكَرَ بَعْدَ أُمَّةٍ أَنَا أُنَبِّئُكُم بِتَأْوِيلِهِ فَأَرْسِلُونِ ٤٥
Then the man who was released (one of the two who were in prison), now at length remembered and said: "I will tell you its interpretation, so send me forth."
- وَقَالَ الَّذِي نَجَا مِنْهُمَا
- Then the man who was released (one of the two who were in prison),
- وَادَّكَرَ بَعْدَ أُمَّةٍ
- now at length remembered
- أَنَا أُنَبِّئُكُم بِتَأْوِيلِهِ
- and said: 'I will tell you its interpretation,'
- فَأَرْسِلُونِ
- so send me forth.
يُوسُفُ أَيُّهَا الصِّدِّيقُ أَفْتِنَا فِي سَبْعِ بَقَرَاتٍ سِمَانٍ يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌ وَسَبْعِ سُنبُلَاتٍ خُضْرٍ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَاتٍ لَّعَلِّي أَرْجِعُ إِلَى النَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ ٤٦
(He said): "O Yusuf (Joseph), the man of truth! Explain to us (the dream) of seven fat cows whom seven lean ones were devouring, and of seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry, that I may return to the people, and that they may know."
- يُوسُفُ أَيُّهَا الصِّدِّيقُ
- O Yusuf (Joseph), the man of truth!
- أَفْتِنَا فِي سَبْعِ بَقَرَاتٍ سِمَانٍ
- Explain to us (the dream) of seven fat cows
- يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌ
- whom seven lean ones were devouring,
- وَسَبْعِ سُنبُلَاتٍ خُضْرٍ
- and of seven green ears of corn,
- وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَاتٍ
- and (seven) others dry,
- لَّعَلِّي أَرْجِعُ إِلَى النَّاسِ
- that I may return to the people,
- لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ
- and that they may know.
قَالَ تَزْرَعُونَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ دَأَبًا فَمَا حَصَدتُّمْ فَذَرُوهُ فِي سُنبُلِهِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ ٤٧
[(Yusuf (Joseph)] said: "For seven consecutive years, you shall sow as usual and that (the harvest) which you reap you shall leave in ears, (all) - except a little of it which you may eat.
- قَالَ
- [(Yusuf (Joseph)] said:
- تَزْرَعُونَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ دَأَبًا
- For seven consecutive years, you shall sow as usual
- فَمَا حَصَدتُّمْ
- and that (the harvest) which you reap
- فَذَرُوهُ فِي سُنبُلِهِ
- you shall leave in ears,
- إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ
- (all) - except a little of it which you may eat.
ثُمَّ يَأْتِي مِن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ سَبْعٌ شِدَادٌ يَأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنَّ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّا تُحْصِنُونَ ٤٨
"Then will come after that, seven hard (years), which will devour what you have laid by in advance for them, (all) except a little of that which you have guarded (stored).
- ثُمَّ يَأْتِي مِن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ
- Then will come after that,
- سَبْعٌ شِدَادٌ
- seven hard (years),
- يَأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنَّ
- which will devour what you have laid by in advance for them,
- إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّا تُحْصِنُونَ
- (all) except a little of that which you have guarded (stored).
ثُمَّ يَأْتِي مِن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَامٌ فِيهِ يُغَاثُ النَّاسُ وَفِيهِ يَعْصِرُونَ ٤٩
"Then thereafter will come a year in which people will have abundant rain and in which they will press (wine and oil)."
- ثُمَّ يَأْتِي مِن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ
- Then thereafter will come
- عَامٌ فِيهِ يُغَاثُ النَّاسُ
- a year in which people will have abundant rain
- وَفِيهِ يَعْصِرُونَ
- and in which they will press (wine and oil)
وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ ائْتُونِي بِهِ ۖ فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُ الرَّسُولُ قَالَ ارْجِعْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَاسْأَلْهُ مَا بَالُ النِّسْوَةِ اللَّاتِي قَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي بِكَيْدِهِنَّ عَلِيمٌ ٥٠
And the king said: "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Yusuf (Joseph)] said: "Return to your lord and ask him, 'What happened to the women who cut their hands? Surely, my Lord (Allah) is Well-Aware of their plot.
- وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ ائْتُونِي بِهِ ۖ
- And the king said: 'Bring him to me.'
- فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُ الرَّسُولُ
- But when the messenger came to him,
- قَالَ ارْجِعْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ
- [Yusuf (Joseph)] said: 'Return to your lord
- فَاسْأَلْهُ مَا بَالُ النِّسْوَةِ اللَّاتِي قَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۚ
- and ask him, 'What happened to the women who cut their hands?'
- إِنَّ رَبِّي بِكَيْدِهِنَّ عَلِيمٌ
- Surely, my Lord (Allah) is Well-Aware of their plot.
قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُنَّ إِذْ رَاوَدتُّنَّ يُوسُفَ عَن نَّفْسِهِ ۚ قُلْنَ حَاشَ لِلَّهِ مَا عَلِمْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِن سُوءٍ ۚ قَالَتِ امْرَأَتُ الْعَزِيزِ الْآنَ حَصْحَصَ الْحَقُّ أَنَا رَاوَدتُّهُ عَن نَّفْسِهِ وَإِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ ٥١
(The King) said (to the women): "What was your affair when you did seek to seduce Yusuf (Joseph)?" The women said: "Allah forbid! No evil know we against him!" The wife of Al-'Aziz said: "Now the truth is manifest (to all), it was I who sought to seduce him, and he is surely of the truthful."
- قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُنَّ إِذْ رَاوَدتُّنَّ يُوسُفَ عَن نَّفْسِهِ ۚ
- (The King) said (to the women): 'What was your affair when you did seek to seduce Yusuf (Joseph)?'
- قُلْنَ حَاشَ لِلَّهِ مَا عَلِمْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِن سُوءٍ ۚ
- The women said: 'Allah forbid! No evil know we against him!'
- قَالَتِ امْرَأَتُ الْعَزِيزِ الْآنَ حَصْحَصَ الْحَقُّ
- The wife of Al-'Aziz said: 'Now the truth is manifest (to all),'
- أَنَا رَاوَدتُّهُ عَن نَّفْسِهِ وَإِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
- 'it was I who sought to seduce him, and he is surely of the truthful.'
ذَٰلِكَ لِيَعْلَمَ أَنِّي لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِالْغَيْبِ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي كَيْدَ الْخَائِنِينَ ٥٢
[Then Yusuf (Joseph) said: "I asked for this enquiry] in order that he (Al-'Aziz) may know that I betrayed him not in secret. And, verily! Allah guides not the plot of the betrayers.
- ذَٰلِكَ لِيَعْلَمَ
- in order that he (Al-'Aziz) may know
- أَنِّي لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِالْغَيْبِ
- that I betrayed him not in secret.
- وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي كَيْدَ الْخَائِنِينَ
- And, verily! Allah guides not the plot of the betrayers.
۞ وَمَا أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِي ۚ إِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٥٣
"And I free not myself (from the blame). Verily, the (human) self is inclined to evil, except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whom He wills). Verily, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
- ۞ وَمَا أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِي ۚ
- And I free not myself (from the blame)
- إِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ
- Verily, the (human) self is inclined to evil
- إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي ۚ
- except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whom He wills)
- إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
- Verily, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful
وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ ائْتُونِي بِهِ أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِي ۖ فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُ قَالَ إِنَّكَ الْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِينٌ ٥٤
And the king said: "Bring him to me that I may attach him to my person." Then, when he spoke to him, he said: "Verily, this day, you are with us high in rank and fully trusted."
- وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ
- And the king said:
- ائْتُونِي بِهِ
- Bring him to me
- أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِي ۖ
- that I may attach him to my person.
- فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُ
- Then, when he spoke to him,
- قَالَ
- he said:
- إِنَّكَ الْيَوْمَ
- Verily, this day,
- لَدَيْنَا
- you are with us
- مَكِينٌ أَمِينٌ
- high in rank and fully trusted.
قَالَ اجْعَلْنِي عَلَىٰ خَزَائِنِ الْأَرْضِ ۖ إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ ٥٥
[Yusuf (Joseph)] said: "Set me over the storehouses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge" (as a minister of finance in Egypt, in place of Al-'Aziz who was dead at that time).
- قَالَ اجْعَلْنِي عَلَىٰ خَزَائِنِ الْأَرْضِ ۖ
- [Yusuf (Joseph)] said: 'Set me over the storehouses of the land;'
- إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ
- I will indeed guard them with full knowledge.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ ۚ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَاءُ ۖ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ ٥٦
Thus did We give full authority to Yusuf (Joseph) in the land, to take possession therein, as when or where he likes. We bestow of Our Mercy on whom We please, and We make not to be lost the reward of Al-Muhsinun (the good doers - see V. 2:112).
- وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِي الْأَرْضِ
- Thus did We give full authority to Yusuf (Joseph) in the land,
- يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ ۚ
- to take possession therein, as when or where he likes.
- نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَاءُ ۖ
- We bestow of Our Mercy on whom We please,
- وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ
- and We make not to be lost the reward of Al-Muhsinun (the good doers - see V. 2:112).
وَلَأَجْرُ الْآخِرَةِ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ ٥٧
And verily, the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believe and used to fear Allah and keep their duty to Him (by abstaining from all kinds of sins and evil deeds and by performing all kinds of righteous good deeds).
- وَلَأَجْرُ الْآخِرَةِ
- And verily, the reward of the Hereafter
- خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا
- is better for those who believe
- وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ
- and used to fear Allah and keep their duty to Him
- by abstaining from all kinds of sins and evil deeds
- and by performing all kinds of righteous good deeds
