۞ وَمَا أَعْجَلَكَ عَن قَوْمِكَ يَا مُوسَىٰ ٨٣
"And what made you hasten from your people, O Musa (Moses)?"
- ۞ وَمَا أَعْجَلَكَ
- And what made you hasten
- عَن قَوْمِكَ
- from your people
- يَا مُوسَىٰ
- O Musa (Moses)?
قَالَ هُمْ أُولَاءِ عَلَىٰ أَثَرِي وَعَجِلْتُ إِلَيْكَ رَبِّ لِتَرْضَىٰ ٨٤
He said: "They are close on my footsteps, and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased."
- قَالَ هُمْ أُولَاءِ عَلَىٰ
- They are close on my footsteps
- أَثَرِي وَعَجِلْتُ إِلَيْكَ
- I hastened to You, O my Lord
- رَبِّ
- that You might be pleased
قَالَ فَإِنَّا قَدْ فَتَنَّا قَوْمَكَ مِن بَعْدِكَ وَأَضَلَّهُمُ السَّامِرِيُّ ٨٥
(Allah) said: "Verily! We have tried your people in your absence, and As-Samiri has led them astray."
- قَالَ
- Allah said:
- فَإِنَّا قَدْ فَتَنَّا قَوْمَكَ
- Verily! We have tried your people
- مِن بَعْدِكَ
- in your absence,
- وَأَضَلَّهُمُ السَّامِرِيُّ
- and As-Samiri has led them astray.
فَرَجَعَ مُوسَىٰ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ غَضْبَانَ أَسِفًا ۚ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَلَمْ يَعِدْكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ وَعْدًا حَسَنًا ۚ أَفَطَالَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْعَهْدُ أَمْ أَرَدتُّمْ أَن يَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَخْلَفْتُم مَّوْعِدِي ٨٦
Then Musa (Moses) returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow. He said: "O my people! Did not your Lord promise you a fair promise? Did then the promise seem to you long in coming? Or did you desire that wrath should descend from your Lord on you, so you broke your promise to me (i.e. disbelieving in Allah and worshipping the calf)?"
- فَرَجَعَ مُوسَىٰ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ غَضْبَانَ أَسِفًا ۚ
- Then Musa (Moses) returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow.
- قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَلَمْ
- He said: 'O my people!'
- يَعِدْكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ وَعْدًا حَسَنًا ۚ أَفَطَالَ
- Did not your Lord promise you a fair promise?
- عَلَيْكُمُ الْعَهْدُ أَمْ
- Did then the promise seem to you long in coming?
- أَرَدتُّمْ أَن يَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَخْلَفْتُم
- Or did you desire that wrath should descend from your Lord on you,
- مَّوْعِدِي
- so you broke your promise to me (i.e. disbelieving in Allah and worshipping the calf)?
قَالُوا مَا أَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا وَلَٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْنَا أَوْزَارًا مِّن زِينَةِ الْقَوْمِ فَقَذَفْنَاهَا فَكَذَٰلِكَ أَلْقَى السَّامِرِيُّ ٨٧
They said: "We broke not the promise to you, of our own will, but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh)] people, then we cast them (into the fire), and that was what As-Samiri suggested."
- قَالُوا مَا أَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا
- They said: 'We broke not the promise to you, of our own will,'
- وَلَٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْنَا أَوْزَارًا مِّن زِينَةِ الْقَوْمِ
- but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh)] people,
- فَقَذَفْنَاهَا
- then we cast them (into the fire),
- فَكَذَٰلِكَ أَلْقَى السَّامِرِيُّ
- and that was what As-Samiri suggested.
فَأَخْرَجَ لَهُمْ عِجْلًا جَسَدًا لَّهُ خُوَارٌ فَقَالُوا هَٰذَا إِلَٰهُكُمْ وَإِلَٰهُ مُوسَىٰ فَنَسِيَ ٨٨
Then he took out (of the fire) for them a statue of a calf which seemed to low. They said: "This is your ilah (god), and the ilah (god) of Musa (Moses), but [Musa (Moses)] has forgotten (his god).'"
- فَأَخْرَجَ لَهُمْ عِجْلًا جَسَدًا لَّهُ خُوَارٌ
- Then he took out (of the fire) for them a statue of a calf which seemed to low.
- فَقَالُوا هَٰذَا إِلَٰهُكُمْ
- They said: 'This is your ilah (god),
- وَإِلَٰهُ مُوسَىٰ
- and the ilah (god) of Musa (Moses),
- فَنَسِيَ
- but [Musa (Moses)] has forgotten (his god).'
أَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَلَّا يَرْجِعُ إِلَيْهِمْ قَوْلًا وَلَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا نَفْعًا ٨٩
Did they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?
- أَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ
- Did they not see that
- أَلَّا يَرْجِعُ إِلَيْهِمْ قَوْلًا
- it could not return them a word (for answer),
- وَلَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ ضَرًّا
- and that it had no power either to harm them
- وَلَا نَفْعًا
- or to do them good?
وَلَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَارُونُ مِن قَبْلُ يَا قَوْمِ إِنَّمَا فُتِنتُم بِهِ ۖ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ فَاتَّبِعُونِي وَأَطِيعُوا أَمْرِي ٩٠
And Harun (Aaron) indeed had said to them beforehand: "O my people! You are being tried in this, and verily, your Lord is (Allah) the Most Beneficent, so follow me and obey my order."
- وَلَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَارُونُ مِن قَبْلُ
- And Harun (Aaron) indeed had said to them beforehand:
- يَا قَوْمِ إِنَّمَا
- O my people!
- فُتِنتُم بِهِ ۖ وَإِنَّ
- You are being tried in this,
- رَبَّكُمُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ فَاتَّبِعُونِي
- and verily, your Lord is (Allah) the Most Beneficent,
- وَأَطِيعُوا
- so follow me
- أَمْرِي
- and obey my order.
قَالُوا لَن نَّبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفِينَ حَتَّىٰ يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ ٩١
They said: "We will not stop worshipping it (i.e. the calf), until Musa (Moses) returns to us."
- قَالُوا
- They said:
- لَن نَّبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفِينَ
- We will not stop worshipping it (i.e. the calf),
- حَتَّىٰ يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ
- until Musa (Moses) returns to us.
قَالَ يَا هَارُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوا ٩٢
[Musa (Moses)] said: "O Harun (Aaron)! What stopped you when you saw them going astray;
- قَالَ يَا هَارُونُ مَا
- [Musa (Moses)] said: 'O Harun (Aaron)!
- مَنَعَكَ إِذْ
- What stopped you
- رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوا
- when you saw them
- going astray;
أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ ۖ أَفَعَصَيْتَ أَمْرِي ٩٣
"That you followed me not (according to my advice to you)? Have you then disobeyed my order?"
- أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ ۖ
- That you followed me not
- أَفَعَصَيْتَ
- Have you then disobeyed
- أَمْرِي
- my order?
قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أُمَّ لَا تَأْخُذْ بِلِحْيَتِي وَلَا بِرَأْسِي ۖ إِنِّي خَشِيتُ أَن تَقُولَ فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِي ٩٤
He [Harun (Aaron)] said: "O son of my mother! Seize (me) not by my beard, nor by my head! Verily, I feared lest you should say: 'You have caused a division among the Children of Israel, and you have not respected my word!' "
- قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أُمَّ لَا تَأْخُذْ
- He [Harun (Aaron)] said: 'O son of my mother!
- بِلِحْيَتِي وَلَا بِرَأْسِي ۖ إِنِّي خَشِيتُ
- Seize (me) not by my beard, nor by my head!
- أَن تَقُولَ فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ
- Verily, I feared lest you should say:
- بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ
- 'You have caused a division among the Children of Israel,
- قَوْلِي
- and you have not respected my word!'
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَا سَامِرِيُّ ٩٥
[Musa (Moses)] said: "And what is the matter with you. O Samiri? (i.e. why did you do so?)"
- قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ
- And what is the matter with you
- يَا سَامِرِيُّ
- O Samiri?
- (i.e. why did you do so?)
قَالَ بَصُرْتُ بِمَا لَمْ يَبْصُرُوا بِهِ فَقَبَضْتُ قَبْضَةً مِّنْ أَثَرِ الرَّسُولِ فَنَبَذْتُهَا وَكَذَٰلِكَ سَوَّلَتْ لِي نَفْسِي ٩٦
(Samiri) said: "I saw what they saw not, so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger [Jibrael's (Gabriel) horse] and threw it [into the fire in which were put the ornaments of the Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, or into the calf]. Thus my inner-self suggested to me."
- قَالَ بَصُرْتُ بِمَا لَمْ يَبْصُرُوا بِهِ
- I saw what they saw not
- فَقَبَضْتُ قَبْضَةً مِّنْ أَثَرِ الرَّسُولِ
- so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger
- فَنَبَذْتُهَا
- and threw it
- وَكَذَٰلِكَ سَوَّلَتْ لِي نَفْسِي
- Thus my inner-self suggested to me
قَالَ فَاذْهَبْ فَإِنَّ لَكَ فِي الْحَيَاةِ أَن تَقُولَ لَا مِسَاسَ ۖ وَإِنَّ لَكَ مَوْعِدًا لَّن تُخْلَفَهُ ۖ وَانظُرْ إِلَىٰ إِلَٰهِكَ الَّذِي ظَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفًا ۖ لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُ ثُمَّ لَنَنسِفَنَّهُ فِي الْيَمِّ نَسْفًا ٩٧
Musa (Moses) said: "Then go away! And verily, your (punishment) in this life will be that you will say: "Touch me not (i.e. you will live alone exiled away from mankind); and verily (for a future torment), you have a promise that will not fail. And look at your ilah (god), to which you have been devoted. We will certainly burn it, and scatter its particles in the sea."
- قَالَ
- Then go away!
- فَاذْهَبْ فَإِنَّ لَكَ فِي الْحَيَاةِ أَن تَقُولَ لَا
- And verily, your (punishment) in this life will be that you will say: 'Touch me not (i.e. you will live alone exiled away from mankind);'
- مِسَاسَ ۖ وَإِنَّ لَكَ مَوْعِدًا لَّن
- And verily (for a future torment), you have a promise that will not fail.
- تُخْلَفَهُ ۖ وَانظُرْ إِلَىٰ إِلَٰهِكَ الَّذِي ظَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ
- And look at your ilah (god), to which you have been devoted.
- عَاكِفًا ۖ
- We will certainly burn it,
- لَّنُحَرِّقَنَّهُ ثُمَّ لَنَنسِفَنَّهُ فِي الْيَمِّ
- and scatter its particles in the sea.
إِنَّمَا إِلَٰهُكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا ٩٨
Your Ilah (God) is only Allah, the One (La ilaha illa Huwa) (none has the right to be worshipped but He). He has full knowledge of all things.
- إِنَّمَا إِلَٰهُكُمُ اللَّهُ
- Your Ilah (God) is only Allah,
- الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ
- the One (La ilaha illa Huwa) (none has the right to be worshipped but He).
- وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا
- He has full knowledge of all things.
كَذَٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنبَاءِ مَا قَدْ سَبَقَ ۚ وَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكْرًا ٩٩
Thus We relate to you (O Muhammad SAW) some information of what happened before. And indeed We have given you from Us a Reminder (this Quran).
- كَذَٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ
- Thus We relate to you
- مِنْ أَنبَاءِ مَا قَدْ سَبَقَ ۚ
- some information of what happened before.
- وَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ
- And indeed We have given you
- مِن لَّدُنَّا ذِكْرًا
- from Us a Reminder (this Quran).
