يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنفَالِ ۖ قُلِ الْأَنفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ ۖ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَصْلِحُوا ذَاتَ بَيْنِكُمْ ۖ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ ١

[8:1] They ask you (O Muhammad SAW) about the spoils of war. Say: "The spoils are for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and adjust all matters of difference among you, and obey Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), if you are believers.

يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنفَالِ ۖ

They ask you (O Muhammad SAW) about the spoils of war.

قُلِ الْأَنفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ ۖ

Say: 'The spoils are for Allah and the Messenger.'

فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَصْلِحُوا ذَاتَ بَيْنِكُمْ ۖ

So fear Allah and adjust all matters of difference among you,

وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

and obey Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), if you are believers.

[8:2] The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Quran) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone);

إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

The believers are only those who

الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ

when Allah is mentioned

وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ

feel a fear in their hearts

وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُهُ

and when His Verses (this Quran) are recited unto them

وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

[8:4] It is they who are the believers in truth. For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and Forgiveness and a generous provision (Paradise).

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا ۚ

It is they who are the believers in truth.

لَّهُمْ دَرَجَاتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ

For them are grades of dignity with their Lord,

وَمَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ

and Forgiveness and a generous provision (Paradise).

[8:5] As your Lord caused you (O Muhammad SAW) to go out from your home with the truth, and verily, a party among the believers disliked it;

كَمَا أَخْرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ

As your Lord caused you

مِن بَيْتِكَ بِالْحَقِّ

to go out from your home with the truth

وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

and verily, a party among the believers

لَكَارِهُونَ

disliked it

[8:6] Disputing with you concerning the truth after it was made manifest, as if they were being driven to death, while they were looking (at it).

يُجَادِلُونَكَ فِي الْحَقِّ

Disputing with you concerning the truth

بَعْدَ مَا تَبَيَّنَ

after it was made manifest

كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ

as if they were being driven to death

وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ

while they were looking (at it)

وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ اللَّهُ إِحْدَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ الشَّوْكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمْ وَيُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَن يُحِقَّ الْحَقَّ بِكَلِمَاتِهِ وَيَقْطَعَ دَابِرَ الْكَافِرِينَ ٧

[8:7] And (remember) when Allah promised you (Muslims) one of the two parties (of the enemy i.e. either the army or the caravan) that it should be yours, you wished that the one not armed (the caravan) should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the truth by His Words and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers (i.e. in the battle of Badr).

وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ اللَّهُ

And (remember) when Allah promised you

إِحْدَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ

one of the two parties

أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ

that it should be yours

وَتَوَدُّونَ

you wished that

أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ الشَّوْكَةِ

the one not armed

تَكُونُ لَكُمْ

should be yours

وَيُرِيدُ اللَّهُ

but Allah willed to

أَن يُحِقَّ الْحَقَّ بِكَلِمَاتِهِ

justify the truth by His Words

وَيَقْطَعَ دَابِرَ الْكَافِرِينَ

and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers

وَإِذْ

وَيُبْطِلَ الْبَاطِلَ

and bring falsehood to nothing

وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُجْرِمُونَ

[8:9] (Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): "I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in succession."

إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ

(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord

فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ

and He answered you

أَنِّي مُمِدُّكُم بِأَلْفٍ مِّنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ

(saying): 'I will help you with a thousand of the angels

مُرْدِفِينَ

each behind the other (following one another) in succession.

[8:10] Allah made it only as glad tidings, and that your hearts be at rest therewith. And there is no victory except from Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

وَمَا جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بُشْرَىٰ

Allah made it only as glad tidings

وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ بِهِ قُلُوبُكُمْ ۚ

and that your hearts be at rest therewith.

وَمَا النَّصْرُ إِلَّا مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ ۚ

And there is no victory except from Allah.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

وَمَا

إِذْ يُغَشِّيكُمُ النُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةً مِّنْهُ وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً لِّيُطَهِّرَكُم بِهِ وَيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدَامَ ١١

[8:11] (Remember) when He covered you with a slumber as a security from Him, and He caused water (rain) to descend on you from the sky, to clean you thereby and to remove from you the Rijz (whispering, evil-suggestions, etc.) of Shaitan (Satan), and to strengthen your hearts, and make your feet firm thereby.

إِذْ يُغَشِّيكُمُ النُّعَاسَ

(Remember) when He covered you with a slumber

أَمَنَةً مِّنْهُ

as a security from Him

وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً

and He caused water (rain) to descend on you from the sky

لِّيُطَهِّرَكُم بِهِ

to clean you thereby

وَيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطَانِ

and to remove from you the Rijz (whispering, evil-suggestions, etc.) of Shaitan (Satan)

وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمْ

and to strengthen your hearts

وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدَامَ

and make your feet firm thereby

إِذْ يُوحِي رَبُّكَ إِلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ أَنِّي مَعَكُمْ فَثَبِّتُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ۚ سَأُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ فَاضْرِبُوا فَوْقَ الْأَعْنَاقِ وَاضْرِبُوا مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ بَنَانٍ ١٢

[8:12] (Remember) when your Lord inspired the angels, "Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes."

إِذْ يُوحِي رَبُّكَ إِلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ

when your Lord inspired the angels

أَنِّي مَعَكُمْ

Verily, I am with you

فَثَبِّتُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ۚ

so keep firm those who have believed

سَأُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ

I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved

فَاضْرِبُوا فَوْقَ الْأَعْنَاقِ

so strike them over the necks

وَاضْرِبُوا مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ بَنَانٍ

and smite over all their fingers and toes

إِذْ

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ شَاقُّوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ ١٣

[8:13] This is because they defied and disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever defies and disobeys Allah and His Messenger, then verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ شَاقُّوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ

This is because they defied and disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.

وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ

And whoever defies and disobeys Allah and His Messenger,

فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ

then verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.

ذَٰلِكَ

[8:14] This is the torment, so taste it, and surely for the disbelievers is the torment of the Fire.

and surely for the disbelievers is the torment of the Fire

[8:15] O you who believe! When you meet those who disbelieve, in a battle-field, never turn your backs to them.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا

O you who believe!

لَقِيتُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا زَحْفًا

When you meet those who disbelieve,

فَلَا

in a battle-field,

تُوَلُّوهُمُ الْأَدْبَارَ

never turn your backs to them.

وَمَن يُوَلِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ دُبُرَهُ إِلَّا مُتَحَرِّفًا لِّقِتَالٍ أَوْ مُتَحَيِّزًا إِلَىٰ فِئَةٍ فَقَدْ بَاءَ بِغَضَبٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَمَأْوَاهُ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ ١٦

[8:16] And whoever turns his back to them on such a day - unless it be a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own), - he indeed has drawn upon himself wrath from Allah. And his abode is Hell, and worst indeed is that destination!

وَمَن يُوَلِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ دُبُرَهُ

And whoever turns his back to them on such a day

إِلَّا مُتَحَرِّفًا لِّقِتَالٍ

unless it be a stratagem of war

أَوْ مُتَحَيِّزًا إِلَىٰ فِئَةٍ

or to retreat to a troop (of his own)

فَقَدْ بَاءَ بِغَضَبٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ

فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْ ۚ وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ رَمَىٰ ۚ وَلِيُبْلِيَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْهُ بَلَاءً حَسَنًا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ١٧

[8:17] You killed them not, but Allah killed them. And you (Muhammad SAW) threw not when you did throw but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair trial from Him. Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ

You killed them not,

وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْ ۚ

but Allah killed them.

وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ

And you (Muhammad SAW) threw not when you did throw

وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ رَمَىٰ ۚ

but Allah threw,

وَلِيُبْلِيَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْهُ بَلَاءً حَسَنًا ۚ

that He might test the believers by a fair trial from Him.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

فَلَمْ

ذَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ مُوهِنُ كَيْدِ الْكَافِرِينَ ١٨

[8:18] This (is the fact) and surely, Allah weakens the deceitful plots of the disbelievers.

ذَٰلِكُمْ

This (is the fact)

وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ

and surely, Allah

مُوهِنُ كَيْدِ الْكَافِرِينَ

weakens the deceitful plots of the disbelievers

إِن تَسْتَفْتِحُوا فَقَدْ جَاءَكُمُ الْفَتْحُ ۖ وَإِن تَنتَهُوا فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تَعُودُوا نَعُدْ وَلَن تُغْنِيَ عَنكُمْ فِئَتُكُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ كَثُرَتْ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ١٩

[8:19] (O disbelievers) if you ask for a judgement, now has the judgement come unto you and if you cease (to do wrong), it will be better for you, and if you return (to the attack), so shall We return, and your forces will be of no avail to you, however numerous it be, and verily, Allah is with the believers.

إِن تَسْتَفْتِحُوا

if you ask for a judgement

فَقَدْ جَاءَكُمُ الْفَتْحُ ۖ

now has the judgement come unto you

وَإِن تَنتَهُوا

and if you cease (to do wrong)

فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ

it will be better for you

وَإِن تَعُودُوا

and if you return (to the attack)

نَعُدْ

so shall We return

وَلَن تُغْنِيَ عَنكُمْ فِئَتُكُمْ شَيْئًا

and your forces will be of no avail to you

وَلَوْ كَثُرَتْ

however numerous it be

وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

and verily, Allah is with the believers

[8:20] O you who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger, and turn not away from him (i.e. Messenger Muhammad SAW) while you are hearing.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا

O you who believe!

اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَا

Obey Allah and His Messenger,

تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ

and turn not away from him

تَسْمَعُونَ

while you are hearing.

يَا أَيُّهَا

[8:22] Verily! The worst of (moving) living creatures with Allah are the deaf and the dumb, those who understand not (i.e. the disbelievers).

۞ إِنَّ شَرَّ الدَّوَابِّ عِندَ اللَّهِ

Verily! The worst of (moving) living creatures with Allah

الصُّمُّ الْبُكْمُ

are the deaf and the dumb

الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

those who understand not (i.e. the disbelievers)

۞ إِنَّ

[8:23] Had Allah known of any good in them, He would indeed have made them listen, and even if He had made them listen, they would but have turned away, averse (to the truth).

وَلَوْ عَلِمَ اللَّهُ فِيهِمْ خَيْرًا

Had Allah known of any good in them

لَّأَسْمَعَهُمْ ۖ

He would indeed have made them listen

وَلَوْ أَسْمَعَهُمْ

and even if He had made them listen

لَتَوَلَّوا

they would but have turned away

وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

averse (to the truth)

وَلَوْ

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ ۖ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَحُولُ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَأَنَّهُ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ ٢٤

[8:24] O you who believe! Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he (SAW) calls you to that which will give you life, and know that Allah comes in between a person and his heart (i.e. He prevents an evil person to decide anything). And verily to Him you shall (all) be gathered.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا

O you who believe!

لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا

Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger

دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ ۖ وَاعْلَمُوا

when he (SAW) calls you to that which will give you life,

أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَحُولُ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَأَنَّهُ

and know that Allah comes in between a person and his heart

إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

And verily to Him you shall (all) be gathered.

يَا أَيُّهَا

[8:25] And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that Allah is Severe in punishment.

وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً

And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.)

لَّا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنكُمْ خَاصَّةً ۖ

which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong

وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ

and know that Allah is Severe in punishment

وَاذْكُرُوا إِذْ أَنتُمْ قَلِيلٌ مُّسْتَضْعَفُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تَخَافُونَ أَن يَتَخَطَّفَكُمُ النَّاسُ فَآوَاكُمْ وَأَيَّدَكُم بِنَصْرِهِ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ ٢٦

[8:26] And remember when you were few and were reckoned weak in the land, and were afraid that men might kidnap you, but He provided a safe place for you, strengthened you with His Help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.

وَاذْكُرُوا إِذْ أَنتُمْ قَلِيلٌ مُّسْتَضْعَفُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ

And remember when you were few and were reckoned weak in the land,

تَخَافُونَ أَن يَتَخَطَّفَكُمُ النَّاسُ

and were afraid that men might kidnap you,

فَآوَاكُمْ

but He provided a safe place for you,

وَأَيَّدَكُم بِنَصْرِهِ

strengthened you with His Help,

وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ

and provided you with good things

لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

so that you might be grateful.

وَاذْكُرُوا

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَخُونُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ وَتَخُونُوا أَمَانَاتِكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ ٢٧

[8:27] O you who believe! Betray not Allah and His Messenger, nor betray knowingly your Amanat (things entrusted to you, and all the duties which Allah has ordained for you).

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا

O you who believe!

تَخُونُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ وَتَخُونُوا

Betray not Allah and His Messenger,

أَمَانَاتِكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ

nor betray knowingly your Amanat

تَعْلَمُونَ

(things entrusted to you, and all the duties which Allah has ordained for you).

يَا أَيُّهَا

[8:28] And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allah is a mighty reward.

وَاعْلَمُوا

And know that

أَنَّمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَأَوْلَادُكُمْ

your possessions and your children

فِتْنَةٌ

are but a trial

وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ

and that surely with Allah

أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ

is a mighty reward

وَاعْلَمُوا

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن تَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَانًا وَيُكَفِّرْ عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ ٢٩

[8:29] O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you Furqan a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن

O you who believe!

تَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ يَجْعَل

If you obey and fear Allah,

لَّكُمْ فُرْقَانًا وَيُكَفِّرْ

He will grant you Furqan

عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ

(a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)]),

وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ

and will expiate for you your sins,

ذُو الْفَضْلِ

and forgive you,

الْعَظِيمِ

and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty.

وَإِذْ يَمْكُرُ بِكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيُثْبِتُوكَ أَوْ يَقْتُلُوكَ أَوْ يُخْرِجُوكَ ۚ وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ اللَّهُ ۖ وَاللَّهُ خَيْرُ الْمَاكِرِينَ ٣٠

[8:30] And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you (O Muhammad SAW) to imprison you, or to kill you, or to get you out (from your home, i.e. Makkah); they were plotting and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners.

وَإِذْ يَمْكُرُ بِكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you (O Muhammad SAW)

لِيُثْبِتُوكَ أَوْ يَقْتُلُوكَ أَوْ يُخْرِجُوكَ ۚ

to imprison you, or to kill you, or to get you out (from your home, i.e. Makkah);

وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ اللَّهُ ۖ

they were plotting and Allah too was planning,

وَاللَّهُ خَيْرُ الْمَاكِرِينَ

and Allah is the Best of the planners.

وَإِذْ

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا قَالُوا قَدْ سَمِعْنَا لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ هَٰذَا ۙ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ٣١

[8:31] And when Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to them, they say: "We have heard this (the Quran); if we wish we can say the like of this. This is nothing but the tales of the ancients."

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا

And when Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to them,

قَالُوا قَدْ سَمِعْنَا

they say: 'We have heard this (the Quran);

لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ هَٰذَا ۙ

if we wish we can say the like of this.

إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

This is nothing but the tales of the ancients.'

وَإِذَا

وَإِذْ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ إِن كَانَ هَٰذَا هُوَ الْحَقَّ مِنْ عِندِكَ فَأَمْطِرْ عَلَيْنَا حِجَارَةً مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ أَوِ ائْتِنَا بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٣٢

[8:32] And (remember) when they said: "O Allah! If this (the Quran) is indeed the truth (revealed) from You, then rain down stones on us from the sky or bring on us a painful torment."

وَإِذْ قَالُوا

And (remember) when they said:

اللَّهُمَّ إِن كَانَ هَٰذَا هُوَ الْحَقَّ مِنْ عِندِكَ

O Allah! If this (the Quran) is indeed the truth (revealed) from You,

فَأَمْطِرْ عَلَيْنَا حِجَارَةً مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ

then rain down stones on us from the sky

أَوِ ائْتِنَا بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

or bring on us a painful torment.

وَإِذْ

[8:33] And Allah would not punish them while you (Muhammad SAW) are amongst them, nor will He punish them while they seek (Allah's) Forgiveness.

وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ

And Allah would not punish them

وَأَنتَ فِيهِمْ ۚ

while you (Muhammad SAW) are amongst them

وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمْ

nor will He punish them

وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

while they seek (Allah's) Forgiveness

وَمَا

وَمَا لَهُمْ أَلَّا يُعَذِّبَهُمُ اللَّهُ وَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَمَا كَانُوا أَوْلِيَاءَهُ ۚ إِنْ أَوْلِيَاؤُهُ إِلَّا الْمُتَّقُونَ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٣٤

[8:34] And why should not Allah punish them while they stop (men) from Al-Masjid-al-Haram, and they are not its guardians? None can be its guardian except Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2), but most of them know not.

وَمَا لَهُمْ أَلَّا يُعَذِّبَهُمُ اللَّهُ

And why should not Allah punish them

وَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ

while they stop (men) from Al-Masjid-al-Haram

وَمَا كَانُوا أَوْلِيَاءَهُ ۚ

and they are not its guardians?

إِنْ أَوْلِيَاؤُهُ إِلَّا الْمُتَّقُونَ

None can be its guardian except Al-Muttaqun (the pious)

وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

but most of them know not.

وَمَا

وَمَا كَانَ صَلَاتُهُمْ عِندَ الْبَيْتِ إِلَّا مُكَاءً وَتَصْدِيَةً ۚ فَذُوقُوا الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ ٣٥

[8:35] Their Salat (prayer) at the House (of Allah, i.e. the Ka'bah at Makkah) was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. Therefore taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve.

وَمَا كَانَ صَلَاتُهُمْ عِندَ الْبَيْتِ

Their Salat (prayer) at the House (of Allah, i.e. the Ka'bah at Makkah) was

إِلَّا مُكَاءً وَتَصْدِيَةً ۚ

nothing but whistling and clapping of hands.

فَذُوقُوا الْعَذَابَ

Therefore taste the punishment

بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

because you used to disbelieve.

وَمَا

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ لِيَصُدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ حَسْرَةً ثُمَّ يُغْلَبُونَ ۗ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ يُحْشَرُونَ ٣٦

[8:36] Verily, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, and so will they continue to spend it; but in the end it will become an anguish for them. Then they will be overcomed. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto Hell.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

Verily, those who disbelieve

يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ

spend their wealth

لِيَصُدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ

to hinder (men) from the Path of Allah

فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا

and so will they continue to spend it

ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ حَسْرَةً

but in the end it will become an anguish for them

ثُمَّ يُغْلَبُونَ ۗ

Then they will be overcomed

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

And those who disbelieve

إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ يُحْشَرُونَ

will be gathered unto Hell

إِنَّ

لِيَمِيزَ اللَّهُ الْخَبِيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ وَيَجْعَلَ الْخَبِيثَ بَعْضَهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ فَيَرْكُمَهُ جَمِيعًا فَيَجْعَلَهُ فِي جَهَنَّمَ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ ٣٧

[8:37] In order that Allah may distinguish the wicked (disbelievers, polytheists and doers of evil deeds) from the good (believers of Islamic Monotheism and doers of righteous deeds), and put the wicked (disbelievers, polytheists and doers of evil deeds) one on another, heap them together and cast them into Hell. Those! it is they who are the losers.

لِيَمِيزَ اللَّهُ الْخَبِيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ

In order that Allah may distinguish the wicked from the good

وَيَجْعَلَ الْخَبِيثَ بَعْضَهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ

and put the wicked one on another

فَيَرْكُمَهُ جَمِيعًا

heap them together

فَيَجْعَلَهُ فِي جَهَنَّمَ ۚ

and cast them into Hell

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ

Those! it is they who are the losers

[8:38] Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven. But if they return (thereto), then the examples of those (punished) before them have already preceded (as a warning).

قُل لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

Say to those who have disbelieved,

إِن يَنتَهُوا

if they cease (from disbelief),

يُغْفَرْ لَهُم مَّا قَدْ سَلَفَ

their past will be forgiven.

وَإِن يَعُودُوا

But if they return (thereto),

فَقَدْ مَضَتْ سُنَّتُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

then the examples of those (punished) before them have already preceded (as a warning).

وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلَّهِ ۚ فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ ٣٩

[8:39] And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone [in the whole of the world]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do.

وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ

And fight them

حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ

until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism)

وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلَّهِ ۚ

and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone

فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا

But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah)

فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do

وَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَاكُمْ ۚ نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ ٤٠

[8:40] And if they turn away, then know that Allah is your Maula (Patron, Lord, Protector and Supporter, etc.), (what) an Excellent Maula, and (what) an Excellent Helper!

وَإِن تَوَلَّوْا

And if they turn away,

فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَاكُمْ ۚ

then know that Allah is your Maula (Patron, Lord, Protector and Supporter, etc.),

نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ

(what) an Excellent Maula,

وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ

and (what) an Excellent Helper!

وَإِن

۞ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا غَنِمْتُم مِّن شَيْءٍ فَأَنَّ لِلَّهِ خُمُسَهُ وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَلِذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْيَتَامَىٰ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ إِن كُنتُمْ آمَنتُم بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا يَوْمَ الْفُرْقَانِ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ٤١

[8:41] And know that whatever of war-booty that you may gain, verily one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allah, and to the Messenger, and to the near relatives [of the Messenger (Muhammad SAW)], (and also) the orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor) and the wayfarer, if you have believed in Allah and in that which We sent down to Our slave (Muhammad SAW) on the Day of criterion (between right and wrong), the Day when the two forces met (the battle of Badr) - And Allah is Able to do all things.

۞ وَاعْلَمُوا

And know that

أَنَّمَا غَنِمْتُم مِّن شَيْءٍ

whatever of war-booty that you may gain,

فَأَنَّ لِلَّهِ خُمُسَهُ

verily one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allah,

وَلِلرَّسُولِ

and to the Messenger,

وَلِذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ

and to the near relatives [of the Messenger (Muhammad SAW)],

وَالْيَتَامَىٰ

(and also) the orphans,

وَالْمَسَاكِينِ

Al-Masakin (the poor)

وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ

and the wayfarer,

إِن كُنتُمْ آمَنتُم بِاللَّهِ

if you have believed in Allah

وَمَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا

and in that which We sent down to Our slave (Muhammad SAW)

يَوْمَ الْفُرْقَانِ

on the Day of criterion (between right and wrong),

يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ ۗ

the Day when the two forces met (the battle of Badr) -

وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

And Allah is Able to do all things.

۞ وَاعْلَمُوا

إِذْ أَنتُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَىٰ وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَلَوْ تَوَاعَدتُّمْ لَاخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِي الْمِيعَادِ ۙ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَيَّ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ ۗ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ٤٢

[8:42] (And remember) when you (the Muslim army) were on the near side of the valley, and they on the farther side, and the caravan on the ground lower than you. Even if you had made a mutual appointment to meet, you would certainly have failed in the appointment, but (you met) that Allah might accomplish a matter already ordained (in His Knowledge); so that those who were to be destroyed (for their rejecting the Faith) might be destroyed after a clear evidence, and those who were to live (i.e. believers) might live after a clear evidence. And surely, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

إِذْ أَنتُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا

(And remember) when you (the Muslim army) were on the near side of the valley,

وَهُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَىٰ

and they on the farther side,

وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ ۚ

لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ

so that those who were to be destroyed (for their rejecting the Faith) might be destroyed after a clear evidence,

وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَيَّ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ ۗ

and those who were to live (i.e. believers) might live after a clear evidence.

وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And surely, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا ۖ وَلَوْ أَرَاكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا لَّفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ سَلَّمَ ۗ إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ ٤٣

[8:43] (And remember) when Allah showed them to you as few in your (i.e. Muhammad's SAW) dream, if He had shown them to you as many, you would surely have been discouraged, and you would surely have disputed in making a decision. But Allah saved (you). Certainly, He is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts.

إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا ۖ

when Allah showed them to you as few in your (i.e. Muhammad's SAW) dream

وَلَوْ أَرَاكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا

if He had shown them to you as many

لَّفَشِلْتُمْ

you would surely have been discouraged

وَلَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ

and you would surely have disputed in making a decision

وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ سَلَّمَ ۗ

But Allah saved (you)

إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ

Certainly, He is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts

[8:44] And (remember) when you met (the army of the disbelievers on the Day of the battle of Badr), He showed them to you as few in your eyes and He made you as few in their eyes, so that Allah might accomplish a matter already ordained (in His Knowledge), and to Allah return all matters (for decision).

وَإِذْ يُرِيكُمُوهُمْ

And (remember) when you met (the army of the disbelievers

[8:45] O you who believe! When you meet (an enemy) force, take a firm stand against them and remember the Name of Allah much (both with tongue and mind), so that you may be successful.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا

O you who believe!

لَقِيتُمْ فِئَةً فَاثْبُتُوا

When you meet (an enemy) force,

وَاذْكُرُوا

take a firm stand against them

اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ

and remember the Name of Allah much (both with tongue and mind),

تُفْلِحُونَ

so that you may be successful.

يَا أَيُّهَا

[8:46] And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ

And obey Allah and His Messenger,

وَلَا تَنَازَعُوا

and do not dispute (with one another)

فَتَفْشَلُوا وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ ۖ

lest you lose courage and your strength depart,

وَاصْبِرُوا ۚ

and be patient.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

[8:47] And be not like those who come out of their homes boastfully and to be seen of men, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah. and Allah is Muhitun (encircling and thoroughly comprehending) all that they do.

وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ

And be not like those who

خَرَجُوا مِن دِيَارِهِم

come out of their homes

بَطَرًا وَرِئَاءَ النَّاسِ

boastfully and to be seen of men

وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ

and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah.

وَاللَّهُ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطٌ

and Allah is Muhitun (encircling and thoroughly comprehending) all that they do.

وَلَا

وَإِذْ زَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَعْمَالَهُمْ وَقَالَ لَا غَالِبَ لَكُمُ الْيَوْمَ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَإِنِّي جَارٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّا تَرَاءَتِ الْفِئَتَانِ نَكَصَ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِّنكُمْ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ مَا لَا تَرَوْنَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّهَ ۚ وَاللَّهُ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ ٤٨

[8:48] And (remember) when Shaitan (Satan) made their (evil) deeds seem fair to them and said, "No one of mankind can overcome you this Day (of the battle of Badr) and verily, I am your neighbour (for each and every help)." But when the two forces came in sight of each other, he ran away and said "Verily, I have nothing to do with you. Verily! I see what you see not. Verily! I fear Allah for Allah is Severe in punishment."

وَإِذْ زَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَعْمَالَهُمْ

وَقَالَ لَا غَالِبَ لَكُمُ الْيَوْمَ مِنَ النَّاسِ

فَلَمَّا تَرَاءَتِ الْفِئَتَانِ

نَكَصَ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ

he ran away and said

وَقَالَ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ

'Verily, I have nothing to do with you.'

مِّنكُمْ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ مَا لَا

'Verily! I see what you see not.'

تَرَوْنَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ

'Verily! I fear Allah'

اللَّهَ ۚ وَاللَّهُ شَدِيدُ

for Allah is Severe in punishment.

وَإِذْ

إِذْ يَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ غَرَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ دِينُهُمْ ۗ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ٤٩

[8:49] When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was a disease (of disbelief) said: "These people (Muslims) are deceived by their religion." But whoever puts his trust in Allah, then surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

إِذْ يَقُولُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ

When the hypocrites said

وَالَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ

and those in whose hearts was a disease

غَرَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ دِينُهُمْ ۗ

These people (Muslims) are deceived by their religion.

وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ

But whoever puts his trust in Allah,

فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

then surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

[8:50] And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelieve (at death), they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): "Taste the punishment of the blazing Fire."

وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذْ يَتَوَفَّى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ۙ

And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelieve (at death)

الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَضْرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَارَهُمْ

they smite their faces and their backs

وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ

(saying): 'Taste the punishment of the blazing Fire.'

[8:51] "This is because of that which your hands had forwarded. And verily, Allah is not unjust to His slaves."

ذَٰلِكَ

This is

بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ

because of that which your hands had forwarded.

وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ

And verily, Allah is not unjust to His slaves.

[8:52] Similar to the behaviour of the people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), and of those before them; they rejected the Ayat (proofs, verses, etc.) of Allah, so Allah punished them for their sins. Verily, Allah is All-Strong, Severe in punishment.

كَدَأْبِ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ ۙ

Similar to the behaviour of the people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh)

وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ

and of those before them

كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ

they rejected the Ayat (proofs, verses, etc.) of Allah

فَأَخَذَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۗ

so Allah punished them for their sins

إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ

Verily, Allah is All-Strong, Severe in punishment

[8:53] That is so because Allah will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their ownselves. And verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ

That is so because Allah

لَمْ يَكُ مُغَيِّرًا نِّعْمَةً أَنْعَمَهَا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ

will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people

حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ ۙ

until they change what is in their own selves.

وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

They belied the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) for they were all Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).

[8:55] Verily, The worst of moving (living) creatures before Allah are those who disbelieve, - so they shall not believe.

إِنَّ شَرَّ الدَّوَابِّ عِندَ اللَّهِ

Verily, the worst of moving (living) creatures before Allah

الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

are those who disbelieve,

فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

so they shall not believe.

[8:56] They are those with whom you made a covenant, but they break their covenant every time and they do not fear Allah.

They are those with whom you made a covenant,

ثُمَّ يَنقُضُونَ عَهْدَهُمْ فِي كُلِّ مَرَّةٍ

but they break their covenant every time

وَهُمْ لَا يَتَّقُونَ

and they do not fear Allah.

[8:57] So if you gain the mastery over them in war, punish them severely in order to disperse those who are behind them, so that they may learn a lesson.

فَإِمَّا تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْ فِي الْحَرْبِ

So if you gain the mastery over them in war,

فَشَرِّدْ بِهِم مَّنْ خَلْفَهُمْ

punish them severely in order to disperse those who are behind them,

لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ

so that they may learn a lesson.

فَإِمَّا

[8:58] If you (O Muhammad SAW) fear treachery from any people throw back (their covenant) to them (so as to be) on equal terms (that there will be no more covenant between you and them). Certainly Allah likes not the treacherous.

وَإِمَّا تَخَافَنَّ مِن قَوْمٍ خِيَانَةً

If you (O Muhammad SAW) fear treachery from any people

فَانبِذْ إِلَيْهِمْ عَلَىٰ سَوَاءٍ ۚ

throw back (their covenant) to them (so as to be) on equal terms

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْخَائِنِينَ

Certainly Allah likes not the treacherous

وَإِمَّا

[8:59] And let not those who disbelieve think that they can outstrip (escape from the punishment). Verily, they will never be able to save themselves (from Allah's Punishment).

وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

And let not those who disbelieve think

سَبَقُوا ۚ

that they can outstrip (escape from the punishment)

إِنَّهُمْ لَا يُعْجِزُونَ

Verily, they will never be able to save themselves (from Allah's Punishment)

وَلَا

وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُم مَّا اسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن قُوَّةٍ وَمِن رِّبَاطِ الْخَيْلِ تُرْهِبُونَ بِهِ عَدُوَّ اللَّهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ وَآخَرِينَ مِن دُونِهِمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَهُمُ اللَّهُ يَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِن شَيْءٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تُظْلَمُونَ ٦٠

[8:60] And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles, artillery, etc.) to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides whom, you may not know but whom Allah does know. And whatever you shall spend in the Cause of Allah shall be repaid unto you, and you shall not be treated unjustly.

وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُم مَّا اسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن قُوَّةٍ

And make ready against them all you can of power,

وَمِن رِّبَاطِ الْخَيْلِ

including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles, artillery, etc.)

تُرْهِبُونَ بِهِ عَدُوَّ اللَّهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ

to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy,

وَآخَرِينَ مِن دُونِهِمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَهُمُ

and others besides whom, you may not know

اللَّهُ يَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ

but whom Allah does know.

وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِن شَيْءٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

And whatever you shall spend in the Cause of Allah

يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تُظْلَمُونَ

shall be repaid unto you, and you shall not be treated unjustly.

وَأَعِدُّوا

۞ وَإِن جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ ٦١

[8:61] But if they incline to peace, you also incline to it, and (put your) trust in Allah. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

۞ وَإِن جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ

But if they incline to peace,

فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا

you also incline to it,

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ

and (put your) trust in Allah.

إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

۞ وَإِن

[8:62] And if they intend to deceive you, then verily, Allah is All-Sufficient for you. He it is Who has supported you with His Help and with the believers.

وَإِن يُرِيدُوا أَن يَخْدَعُوكَ

And if they intend to deceive you,

فَإِنَّ حَسْبَكَ اللَّهُ ۚ

then verily, Allah is All-Sufficient for you.

هُوَ الَّذِي أَيَّدَكَ بِنَصْرِهِ وَبِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ

He it is Who has supported you with His Help and with the believers.

وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ لَوْ أَنفَقْتَ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا مَّا أَلَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ٦٣

[8:63] And He has united their (i.e. believers') hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allah has united them. Certainly He is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ

And He has united their (i.e. believers') hearts.

لَوْ أَنفَقْتَ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا

If you had spent all that is in the earth,

مَّا أَلَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ

you could not have united their hearts,

وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ

but Allah has united them.

إِنَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

Certainly He is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

وَأَلَّفَ

[8:64] O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Allah is Sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ حَسْبُكَ

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ حَرِّضِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى الْقِتَالِ ۚ إِن يَكُن مِّنكُمْ عِشْرُونَ صَابِرُونَ يَغْلِبُوا مِائَتَيْنِ ۚ وَإِن يَكُن مِّنكُم مِّائَةٌ يَغْلِبُوا أَلْفًا مِّنَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ ٦٥

[8:65] O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast persons amongst you, they will overcome two hundred, and if there be a hundred steadfast persons they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are people who do not understand.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ حَرِّضِ

O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)!

الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى الْقِتَالِ ۚ إِن

Urge the believers to fight.

يَكُن مِّنكُمْ عِشْرُونَ صَابِرُونَ يَغْلِبُوا

If there are twenty steadfast persons amongst you,

مِائَتَيْنِ ۚ وَإِن

they will overcome two hundred,

يَكُن مِّنكُم مِّائَةٌ يَغْلِبُوا

and if there be a hundred steadfast persons

أَلْفًا مِّنَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِأَنَّهُمْ

they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve,

قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ

because they (the disbelievers) are people who do not understand.

يَا أَيُّهَا

الْآنَ خَفَّفَ اللَّهُ عَنكُمْ وَعَلِمَ أَنَّ فِيكُمْ ضَعْفًا ۚ فَإِن يَكُن مِّنكُم مِّائَةٌ صَابِرَةٌ يَغْلِبُوا مِائَتَيْنِ ۚ وَإِن يَكُن مِّنكُمْ أَلْفٌ يَغْلِبُوا أَلْفَيْنِ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ ٦٦

[8:66] Now Allah has lightened your (task), for He knows that there is weakness in you. So if there are of you a hundred steadfast persons, they shall overcome two hundred, and if there are a thousand of you, they shall overcome two thousand with the Leave of Allah. And Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

الْآنَ خَفَّفَ اللَّهُ عَنكُمْ

Now Allah has lightened your (task)

وَعَلِمَ أَنَّ فِيكُمْ ضَعْفًا ۚ

for He knows that there is weakness in you

فَإِن يَكُن مِّنكُم مِّائَةٌ صَابِرَةٌ

So if there are of you a hundred steadfast persons

مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَن يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ۚ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللَّهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ٦٧

[8:67] It is not for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land. You desire the good of this world (i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives), but Allah desires (for you) the Hereafter. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ

It is not for a Prophet

أَن يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَىٰ

that he should have prisoners of war

حَتَّىٰ يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ۚ

until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land.

تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا

You desire the good of this world

وَاللَّهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ۗ

but Allah desires (for you) the Hereafter.

وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

[8:68] Were it not a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe torment would have touched you for what you took.

لَّوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ سَبَقَ

Were it not a previous ordainment from Allah

لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ

a severe torment would have touched you for what you took

عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ

a severe torment

لَّوْلَا

[8:69] So enjoy what you have gotten of booty in war, lawful and good, and be afraid of Allah. Certainly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

فَكُلُوا مِمَّا غَنِمْتُمْ

So enjoy what you have gotten of booty in war,

حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا ۚ

lawful and good,

وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ

and be afraid of Allah.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Certainly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

فَكُلُوا

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُل لِّمَن فِي أَيْدِيكُم مِّنَ الْأَسْرَىٰ إِن يَعْلَمِ اللَّهُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ خَيْرًا يُؤْتِكُمْ خَيْرًا مِّمَّا أُخِذَ مِنكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٧٠

[8:70] O Prophet! Say to the captives that are in your hands: "If Allah knows any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than what has been taken from you, and He will forgive you, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُل

O Prophet!

لِّمَن فِي أَيْدِيكُم مِّنَ الْأَسْرَىٰ إِن

Say to the captives that are in your hands:

يَعْلَمِ اللَّهُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ خَيْرًا يُؤْتِكُمْ

If Allah knows any good in your hearts,

خَيْرًا مِّمَّا أُخِذَ مِنكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ

He will give you something better than what has been taken from you,

لَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ

and He will forgive you,

غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

يَا أَيُّهَا

وَإِن يُرِيدُوا خِيَانَتَكَ فَقَدْ خَانُوا اللَّهَ مِن قَبْلُ فَأَمْكَنَ مِنْهُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ٧١

[8:71] But if they intend to betray you (O Muhammad SAW), they have already betrayed Allah before. So He gave (you) power over them. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.

وَإِن يُرِيدُوا خِيَانَتَكَ

But if they intend to betray you (O Muhammad SAW)

فَقَدْ خَانُوا اللَّهَ مِن قَبْلُ

they have already betrayed Allah before.

فَأَمْكَنَ مِنْهُمْ ۗ

So He gave (you) power over them.

وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.

وَإِن

حَكِيمٌ

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِينَ آوَوا وَّنَصَرُوا أُولَٰئِكَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يُهَاجِرُوا مَا لَكُم مِّن وَلَايَتِهِم مِّن شَيْءٍ حَتَّىٰ يُهَاجِرُوا ۚ وَإِنِ اسْتَنصَرُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ فَعَلَيْكُمُ النَّصْرُ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُم مِّيثَاقٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ ٧٢

[8:72] Verily, those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard and fought with their property and their lives in the Cause of Allah as well as those who gave (them) asylum and help, - these are (all) allies to one another. And as to those who believed but did not emigrate (to you O Muhammad SAW), you owe no duty of protection to them until they emigrate, but if they seek your help in religion, it is your duty to help them except against a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance, and Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

Verily, those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard and fought with their property and their lives in the Cause of Allah

وَالَّذِينَ آوَوا وَّنَصَرُوا

as well as those who gave (them) asylum and help,

أُولَٰئِكَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ

these are (all) allies to one another.

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يُهَاجِرُوا

And as to those who believed but did not emigrate (to you O Muhammad SAW),

مَا لَكُم مِّن وَلَايَتِهِم مِّن شَيْءٍ حَتَّىٰ يُهَاجِرُوا ۚ

you owe no duty of protection to them until they emigrate,

وَإِنِ اسْتَنصَرُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ

but if they seek your help in religion,

فَعَلَيْكُمُ النَّصْرُ

it is your duty to help them

إِلَّا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُم مِّيثَاقٌ ۗ

except against a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance,

وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

and Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ إِلَّا تَفْعَلُوهُ تَكُن فِتْنَةٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَفَسَادٌ كَبِيرٌ ٧٣

[8:73] And those who disbelieve are allies to one another, (and) if you (Muslims of the whole world collectively) do not do so (i.e. become allies, as one united block with one Khalifah - chief Muslim ruler for the whole Muslim world to make victorious Allah's Religion of Islamic Monotheism), there will be Fitnah (wars, battles, polytheism, etc.) and oppression on earth, and a great mischief and corruption (appearance of polytheism).

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

And those who disbelieve

بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ

are allies to one another

إِلَّا تَفْعَلُوهُ

if you (Muslims of the whole world collectively) do not do so

تَكُن فِتْنَةٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ

there will be Fitnah (wars, battles, polytheism, etc.) on earth

وَفَسَادٌ كَبِيرٌ

and a great mischief and corruption (appearance of polytheism)

وَالَّذِينَ

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِينَ آوَوا وَّنَصَرُوا أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا ۚ لَّهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ ٧٤

[8:74] And those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard in the Cause of Allah (Al-Jihad), as well as those who gave (them) asylum and aid; - these are the believers in truth, for them is forgiveness and Rizqun Karim (a generous provision i.e. Paradise).

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

And those who believed,

وَهَاجَرُوا

and emigrated

وَجَاهَدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

and strove hard in the Cause of Allah (Al-Jihad),

وَالَّذِينَ آوَوا وَّنَصَرُوا

as well as those who gave (them) asylum and aid;

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا ۚ

these are the believers in truth,

لَّهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ

for them is forgiveness and Rizqun Karim (a generous provision i.e. Paradise).

وَالَّذِينَ

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِن بَعْدُ وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا مَعَكُمْ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَأُولُو الْأَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِبَعْضٍ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ ٧٥

[8:75] And those who believed afterwards, and emigrated and strove hard along with you, (in the Cause of Allah) they are of you. But kindred by blood are nearer to one another regarding inheritance in the decree ordained by Allah. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِن بَعْدُ

And those who believed afterwards,

وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا مَعَكُمْ

and emigrated and strove hard along with you,

فَأُولَٰئِكَ مِنكُمْ ۚ

they are of you.

وَأُولُو الْأَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِبَعْضٍ

But kindred by blood are nearer to one another

فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ ۗ

regarding inheritance in the decree ordained by Allah.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.
