اقْتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمْ وَهُمْ فِي غَفْلَةٍ مُّعْرِضُونَ ١

[21:1] Draws near for mankind their reckoning, while they turn away in heedlessness.

اقْتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمْ

[21:2] Comes not unto them an admonition (a chapter of the Quran) from their Lord as a recent revelation but they listen to it while they play,

[21:3] With their hearts occupied (with evil things) those who do wrong, conceal their private counsels, (saying): "Is this (Muhammad SAW) more than a human being like you? Will you submit to magic while you see it?"

لَاهِيَةً قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗ

With their hearts occupied (with evil things)

وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا

those who do wrong, conceal their private counsels,

هَلْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ ۖ

(saying): 'Is this (Muhammad SAW) more than a human being like you?'

أَفَتَأْتُونَ السِّحْرَ وَأَنتُمْ تُبْصِرُونَ

Will you submit to magic while you see it?

[21:4] He (Muhammad SAW) said: "My Lord knows (every) word (spoken) in the heavens and on earth. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower."

قَالَ رَبِّي

He (Muhammad SAW) said: 'My Lord'

يَعْلَمُ الْقَوْلَ

knows (every) word

فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ

in the heavens and on earth.

وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

[21:5] Nay, they say:"These (revelations of the Quran which are inspired to Muhammad SAW) are mixed up false dreams! Nay, he has invented it! Nay, he is a poet! Let him then bring us an Ayah (sign as a proof) like the ones (Prophets) that were sent before (with signs)!"

بَلْ قَالُوا

Nay, they say:

أَضْغَاثُ أَحْلَامٍ

These (revelations of the Quran which are inspired to Muhammad SAW) are mixed up false dreams!

بَلِ افْتَرَاهُ

Nay, he has invented it!

بَلْ هُوَ شَاعِرٌ

Nay, he is a poet!

فَلْيَأْتِنَا بِآيَةٍ

Let him then bring us an Ayah (sign as a proof)

كَمَا أُرْسِلَ الْأَوَّلُونَ

like the ones (Prophets) that were sent before (with signs)!

[21:7] And We sent not before you (O Muhammad SAW) but men to whom We inspired, so ask the people of the Reminder [Scriptures - the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel)] if you do not know.

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ

And We sent not before you (O Muhammad SAW)

إِلَّا رِجَالًا نُّوحِي إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ

but men to whom We inspired

فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ

so ask the people of the Reminder [Scriptures - the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel)]

[21:8] And We did not create them (the Messengers, with) bodies that ate not food, nor were they immortals,

[21:9] Then We fulfilled to them the promise, and We saved them and those whom We willed, but We destroyed Al-Musrifun (i.e. extravagants in oppression, polytheism and in sin).

ثُمَّ صَدَقْنَاهُمُ الْوَعْدَ

Then We fulfilled to them the promise

فَأَنجَيْنَاهُمْ وَمَن نَّشَاءُ

and We saved them and those whom We willed

وَأَهْلَكْنَا الْمُسْرِفِينَ

but We destroyed Al-Musrifun (i.e. extravagants in oppression, polytheism and in sin)

[21:10] Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind) a Book, (the Quran) in which there is Dhikrukum, (your Reminder or an honour for you i.e. honour for the one who follows the teaching of the Quran and acts on its orders). Will you not then understand?

لَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ

Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind)

كِتَابًا فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ ۖ

a Book, (the Quran) in which there is Dhikrukum, (your Reminder or an honour for you

أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Will you not then understand?

لَقَدْ

[21:11] How many a town (community), that were wrong-doers, have We destroyed, and raised up after them another people!

وَكَمْ قَصَمْنَا

that were wrong-doers,

وَأَنشَأْنَا بَعْدَهَا

[21:12] Then, when they perceived (saw) Our Torment (coming), behold, they (tried to) flee from it.

but return to that wherein you lived a luxurious life,

وَمَسَاكِنِكُمْ

and to your homes,

لَعَلَّكُمْ تُسْأَلُونَ

in order that you may be questioned.

كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ

[21:15] And that cry of theirs ceased not, till We made them as a field that is reaped, extinct (dead).

فَمَا زَالَت تِّلْكَ دَعْوَاهُمْ

حَتَّىٰ جَعَلْنَاهُمْ

till We made them

حَصِيدًا خَامِدِينَ

as a field that is reaped, extinct (dead)

فَمَا

[21:17] Had We intended to take a pastime (i.e. a wife or a son, etc.), We could surely have taken it from Us, if We were going to do (that).

لَوْ أَرَدْنَا

أَن نَّتَّخِذَ لَهْوًا

to take a pastime

لَّاتَّخَذْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا

We could surely have taken it from Us

إِن كُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ

[21:18] Nay, We fling (send down) the truth (this Quran) against the falsehood (disbelief), so it destroys it, and behold, it (falsehood) is vanished. And woe to you for that (lie) which you ascribe (to Us) (against Allah by uttering that Allah has a wife and a son).

بَلْ نَقْذِفُ بِالْحَقِّ

Nay, We fling (send down) the truth

عَلَى الْبَاطِلِ

against the falsehood

فَيَدْمَغُهُ

so it destroys it

فَإِذَا هُوَ زَاهِقٌ ۚ

and behold, it (falsehood) is vanished

وَلَكُمُ الْوَيْلُ

And woe to you

مِمَّا تَصِفُونَ

for that (lie) which you ascribe (to Us)

[21:19] To Him belongs whosoever is in the heavens and on earth. And those who are near Him (i.e. the angels) are not too proud to worship Him, nor are they weary (of His worship).

وَلَهُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ

To Him belongs whosoever is in the heavens and on earth.

وَمَنْ عِندَهُ

And those who are near Him (i.e. the angels)

لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِهِ

are not too proud to worship Him,

وَلَا يَسْتَحْسِرُونَ

nor are they weary (of His worship).

وَلَهُ

[21:22] Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!

لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَا آلِهَةٌ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah,

لَفَسَدَتَا ۚ

then verily both would have been ruined.

فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ

Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne,

عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

(High is He) above what they attribute to Him!

[21:24] Or have they taken for worship (other) aliha (gods) besides Him? Say: "Bring your proof:" This (the Quran) is the Reminder for those with me and the Reminder for those before me. But most of them know not the Truth, so they are averse.

أَمِ اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِهِ آلِهَةً ۖ

Or have they taken for worship (other) aliha (gods) besides Him?

قُلْ هَاتُوا بُرْهَانَكُمْ ۖ

Say: 'Bring your proof:'

هَٰذَا ذِكْرُ مَن مَّعِيَ وَذِكْرُ مَن قَبْلِي ۗ

This (the Quran) is the Reminder for those with me and the Reminder for those before me.

بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ الْحَقَّ ۖ

But most of them know not the Truth,

فَهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

so they are averse.

[21:25] And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad SAW) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)."

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ

And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad SAW)

إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ

but We inspired him

أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا

saying: La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)]

فَاعْبُدُونِ

[21:26] And they say: "The Most Beneficent (Allah) has begotten a son (or children)." Glory to Him! They [those whom they call children of Allah i.e. the angels, 'Iesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), 'Uzair (Ezra), etc.], are but honoured slaves.

وَقَالُوا

And they say:

اتَّخَذَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَلَدًا ۗ

The Most Beneficent (Allah) has begotten a son (or children).

سُبْحَانَهُ ۚ

Glory to Him!

[21:28] He knows what is before them, and what is behind them, and they cannot intercede except for him with whom He is pleased. And they stand in awe for fear of Him.

[21:29] And if any of them should say: "Verily, I am an ilah (a god) besides Him (Allah)," such a one We should recompense with Hell. Thus We recompense the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).

۞ وَمَن يَقُلْ مِنْهُمْ

And if any of them should say:

إِنِّي إِلَٰهٌ مِّن دُونِهِ

"Verily, I am an ilah (a god) besides Him (Allah),"

فَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِيهِ جَهَنَّمَ ۚ

such a one We should recompense with Hell.

كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الظَّالِمِينَ

Thus We recompense the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).

[21:30] Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them? And We have made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

Have not those who disbelieve known

أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا

that the heavens and the earth were joined together as one united piece

فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا ۖ

then We parted them?

وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ ۖ

And We have made from water every living thing.

أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Will they not then believe?

أَوَلَمْ

[21:31] And We have placed on the earth firm mountains, lest it should shake with them, and We placed therein broad highways for them to pass through, that they may be guided.

وَجَعَلْنَا فِي الْأَرْضِ رَوَاسِيَ

And We have placed on the earth firm mountains,

أَن تَمِيدَ بِهِمْ

lest it should shake with them,

وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا فِجَاجًا سُبُلًا

and We placed therein broad highways for them to pass through,

لَّعَلَّهُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ

that they may be guided.

وَجَعَلْنَا

[21:32] And We have made the heaven a roof, safe and well guarded. Yet they turn away from its signs (i.e. sun, moon, winds, clouds, etc.).

وَجَعَلْنَا السَّمَاءَ

And We have made the heaven

سَقْفًا مَّحْفُوظًا ۖ

a roof, safe and well guarded.

وَهُمْ عَنْ آيَاتِهَا

Yet they turn away from its signs

وَجَعَلْنَا

[21:33] And He it is Who has created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each in an orbit floating.

وَهُوَ الَّذِي

And He it is Who

خَلَقَ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ

has created the night and the day,

وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ ۖ

and the sun and the moon,

كُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ

each in an orbit floating.

[21:34] And We granted not to any human being immortality before you (O Muhammad SAW), then if you die, would they live forever?

وَمَا جَعَلْنَا لِبَشَرٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ الْخُلْدَ ۖ

And We granted not to any human being immortality before you (O Muhammad SAW)

أَفَإِن مِّتَّ

then if you die

فَهُمُ الْخَالِدُونَ

would they live forever?

وَمَا

[21:35] Everyone is going to taste death, and We shall make a trial of you with evil and with good, and to Us you will be returned.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ۗ

Everyone is going to taste death

وَنَبْلُوكُم بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ

and We shall make a trial of you with evil and with good

فِتْنَةً ۖ

as a trial

وَإِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ

and to Us you will be returned

وَإِذَا رَآكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِن يَتَّخِذُونَكَ إِلَّا هُزُوًا أَهَٰذَا الَّذِي يَذْكُرُ آلِهَتَكُمْ وَهُم بِذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ هُمْ كَافِرُونَ ٣٦

[21:36] And when those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah) see you (O Muhammad SAW), they take you not except for mockery (saying): "Is this the one who talks (badly) about your gods?" While they disbelieve at the mention of the Most Beneficent (Allah). [Tafsir. Al-Qurtubi].

وَإِذَا رَآكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

And when those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah) see you (O Muhammad SAW)

إِن يَتَّخِذُونَكَ إِلَّا هُزُوًا

they take you not except for mockery

أَهَٰذَا الَّذِي يَذْكُرُ آلِهَتَكُمْ

(saying): 'Is this the one who talks (badly) about your gods?'

وَهُم بِذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ هُمْ كَافِرُونَ

While they disbelieve at the mention of the Most Beneficent (Allah).

[21:37] Man is created of haste, I will show you My Ayat (torments, proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). So ask Me not to hasten (them).

خُلِقَ الْإِنسَانُ مِنْ عَجَلٍ ۚ

Man is created of haste

سَأُرِيكُمْ آيَاتِي

I will show you My Ayat

فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُونِ

So ask Me not to hasten (them)

[21:38] And they say: "When will this promise (come to pass), if you are truthful."

[21:39] If only those who disbelieved knew (the time) when they will not be able to ward off the Fire from their faces, nor from their backs; and they will not be helped.

لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

If only those who disbelieved knew

حِينَ لَا يَكُفُّونَ عَن وُجُوهِهِمُ النَّارَ

the time when they will not be able to ward off the Fire from their faces

وَلَا عَن ظُهُورِهِمْ

nor from their backs

وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ

and they will not be helped

[21:40] Nay, it (the Fire or the Day of Resurrection) will come upon them all of a sudden and will perplex them, and they will have no power to avert it, nor will they get respite.

بَلْ تَأْتِيهِم بَغْتَةً

Nay, it will come upon them all of a sudden

فَتَبْهَتُهُمْ

and will perplex them

فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ رَدَّهَا

and they will have no power to avert it

وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ

nor will they get respite

[21:41] Indeed (many) Messengers were mocked before you (O Muhammad SAW), but the scoffers were surrounded by that, whereat they used to mock.

وَلَقَدِ اسْتُهْزِئَ بِرُسُلٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ

Indeed (many) Messengers were mocked before you (O Muhammad SAW)

فَحَاقَ بِالَّذِينَ سَخِرُوا مِنْهُم

but the scoffers were surrounded by that

مَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ

whereat they used to mock

[21:42] Say: "Who can guard and protect you in the night or in the day from the (punishment of the) Most Beneficent (Allah)?" Nay, but they turn away from the remembrance of their Lord.

قُلْ مَن يَكْلَؤُكُم

Say: Who can guard and protect you

بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ

in the night or in the day

مِنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ ۗ

from the (punishment of the) Most Beneficent (Allah)?

بَلْ هُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِم مُّعْرِضُونَ

Nay, but they turn away from the remembrance of their Lord.

[21:43] Or have they aliha (gods) who can guard them from Us? They have no power to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us (i.e. from Our Torment).

أَمْ لَهُمْ آلِهَةٌ

Or have they aliha (gods)

تَمْنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَا ۚ

who can guard them from Us?

لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَ أَنفُسِهِمْ

They have no power to help themselves

وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا يُصْحَبُونَ

nor can they be protected from Us (i.e. from Our Torment)

[21:44] Nay, We gave the luxuries of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them. See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will overcome.

بَلْ مَتَّعْنَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ وَآبَاءَهُمْ

Nay, We gave the luxuries of this life to these men and their fathers

حَتَّىٰ طَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعُمُرُ ۗ

until the period grew long for them.

أَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّا نَأْتِي الْأَرْضَ نَنقُصُهَا مِنْ أَطْرَافِهَا ۚ

See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders?

أَفَهُمُ الْغَالِبُونَ

Is it then they who will overcome.

[21:45] Say (O Muhammad SAW): "I warn you only by the revelation (from Allah and not by the opinion of the religious scholars and others). But the deaf (who follow the religious scholars and others blindly) will not hear the call, (even) when they are warned [(i.e. one should follow only the Quran and the Sunnah (legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements of Prophet Muhammad SAW, as the Companions of the Prophet SAW did)].

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أُنذِرُكُم بِالْوَحْيِ ۚ

Say (O Muhammad SAW): 'I warn you only by the revelation (from Allah)

وَلَا يَسْمَعُ الصُّمُّ الدُّعَاءَ

But the deaf (who follow the religious scholars and others blindly) will not hear the call,

إِذَا مَا يُنذَرُونَ

(even) when they are warned [(i.e. one should follow only the Quran and the Sunnah (legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements of Prophet Muhammad SAW, as the Companions of the Prophet SAW did)]

[21:46] And if a breath (minor calamity) of the Torment of your Lord touches them, they will surely cry: "Woe unto us! Indeed we have been Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).

وَلَئِن مَّسَّتْهُمْ نَفْحَةٌ مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّكَ

[21:47] And We shall set up balances of justice on the Day of Resurrection, then none will be dealt with unjustly in anything. And if there be the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it. And Sufficient are We as Reckoners.

وَنَضَعُ الْمَوَازِينَ الْقِسْطَ

And We shall set up balances of justice

لِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ

on the Day of Resurrection

فَلَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْئًا ۖ

then none will be dealt with unjustly in anything.

وَإِن كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ

And if there be the weight of a mustard seed,

أَتَيْنَا بِهَا ۗ

We will bring it.

وَكَفَىٰ بِنَا حَاسِبِينَ

And Sufficient are We as Reckoners.

[21:48] And indeed We granted to Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) the criterion (of right and wrong), and a shining light [i.e. the Taurat (Torah)] and a Reminder for Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2).

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا

And indeed We granted to

مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ

Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)

الْفُرْقَانَ

the criterion (of right and wrong),

وَضِيَاءً

and a shining light [i.e. the Taurat (Torah)]

وَذِكْرًا

and a Reminder

لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

for Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2).

وَلَقَدْ

[21:49] Those who fear their Lord without seeing Him, while they are afraid of the Hour.

الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُم

Those who fear their Lord

without seeing Him

وَهُم مِّنَ السَّاعَةِ مُشْفِقُونَ

while they are afraid of the Hour

[21:50] And this is a blessed Reminder (the Quran) which We have sent down, will you then (dare to) deny it?

وَهَٰذَا ذِكْرٌ مُّبَارَكٌ

And this is a blessed Reminder (the Quran)

أَنزَلْنَاهُ ۚ

which We have sent down

أَفَأَنتُمْ لَهُ مُنكِرُونَ

will you then (dare to) deny it?

وَهَٰذَا

[21:51] And indeed We bestowed aforetime on Ibrahim (Abraham) his (portion of) guidance, and We were Well-Acquainted with him (as to his Belief in the Oneness of Allah, etc.).

۞ وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ

And indeed We bestowed on Ibrahim (Abraham)

رُشْدَهُ مِن قَبْلُ

his (portion of) guidance aforetime

وَكُنَّا بِهِ عَالِمِينَ

and We were Well-Acquainted with him (as to his Belief in the Oneness of Allah, etc.)

۞ وَلَقَدْ

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا هَٰذِهِ التَّمَاثِيلُ الَّتِي أَنتُمْ لَهَا عَاكِفُونَ ٥٢

[21:52] When he said to his father and his people: "What are these images, to which you are devoted?"

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ

[21:56] He said: "Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them and of that I am one of the witnesses.

Nay, your Lord is

رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ

the Lord of the heavens and the earth,

الَّذِي فَطَرَهُنَّ

Who created them

وَأَنَا عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكُم مِّنَ الشَّاهِدِينَ

and of that I am one of the witnesses.

قَالَ

(to destroy) your idols

بَعْدَ أَن تُوَلُّوا مُدْبِرِينَ

after you have gone away and turned your backs.

[21:58] So he broke them to pieces, (all) except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it.

لَعَلَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ يَرْجِعُونَ

that they might turn to it.

Nay, this one, the biggest of them (idols) did it.

فَاسْأَلُوهُمْ

Ask them,

إِن كَانُوا يَنطِقُونَ

[21:64] So they turned to themselves and said: "Verily, you are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers)."

فَرَجَعُوا إِلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ

So they turned to themselves

فَقَالُوا

and said:

إِنَّكُمْ أَنتُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ

Verily, you are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers).

فَرَجَعُوا

[21:65] Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): "Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!"

ثُمَّ نُكِسُوا عَلَىٰ رُءُوسِهِمْ

Then they turned to themselves

لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ

Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well

مَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ يَنطِقُونَ

that these (idols) speak not!

[21:66] [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Do you then worship besides Allah, things that can neither profit you, nor harm you?

Do you then worship besides Allah

مَا لَا يَنفَعُكُمْ شَيْئًا

things that can neither profit you

وَلَا يَضُرُّكُمْ

الَّتِي بَارَكْنَا فِيهَا

which We have blessed in it

لِلْعَالَمِينَ

for the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns)

وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ

Ishaque (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya'qub (Jacob)

نَافِلَةً ۖ

Each one

وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا صَالِحِينَ

We made righteous

وَوَهَبْنَا

[21:73] And We made them leaders, guiding (mankind) by Our Command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds, performing Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and the giving of Zakat and of Us (Alone) they were worshippers.

وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ أَئِمَّةً

And We made them leaders,

يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا

guiding (mankind) by Our Command,

وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ

and We inspired in them

فِعْلَ الْخَيْرَاتِ

the doing of good deeds,

وَإِقَامَ الصَّلَاةِ

performing Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat),

وَإِيتَاءَ الزَّكَاةِ ۖ

and the giving of Zakat

وَكَانُوا لَنَا عَابِدِينَ

and of Us (Alone) they were worshippers.

وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ

[21:74] And (remember) Lout (Lot), We gave him Hukman (right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) and (religious) knowledge, and We saved him from the town (folk) who practised Al-Khaba'ith (evil, wicked and filthy deeds, etc.). Verily, they were a people given to evil, and were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient, to Allah).

وَلُوطًا

And (remember) Lout (Lot)

آتَيْنَاهُ حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا

We gave him Hukman (right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) and (religious) knowledge

وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْقَرْيَةِ

and We saved him from the town (folk)

الَّتِي كَانَت تَّعْمَلُ الْخَبَائِثَ ۗ

who practised Al-Khaba'ith (evil, wicked and filthy deeds, etc.)

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمَ سَوْءٍ

Verily, they were a people given to evil

فَاسِقِينَ

and were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient, to Allah)

[21:76] And (remember) Nuh (Noah), when he cried (to Us) aforetime. We listened to his invocation and saved him and his family from great distress.

وَنُوحًا إِذْ نَادَىٰ مِن قَبْلُ

And (remember) Nuh (Noah), when he cried (to Us) aforetime.

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ

We listened to his invocation

فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ

and saved him and his family

مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ

from great distress.

[21:77] We helped him against people who denied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). Verily, they were a people given to evil. So We drowned them all.

وَنَصَرْنَاهُ

We helped him

مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا ۚ

[21:78] And (remember) Dawud (David) and Sulaiman (Solomon), when they gave judgement in the case of the field in which the sheep of certain people had pastured at night and We were witness to their judgement.

وَدَاوُودَ وَسُلَيْمَانَ

And (remember) Dawud (David) and Sulaiman (Solomon)

إِذْ يَحْكُمَانِ فِي الْحَرْثِ

when they gave judgement in the case of the field

إِذْ نَفَشَتْ فِيهِ غَنَمُ الْقَوْمِ

in which the sheep of certain people had pastured at night

وَكُنَّا لِحُكْمِهِمْ شَاهِدِينَ

and We were witness to their judgement

[21:79] And We made Sulaiman (Solomon) to understand (the case), and to each of them We gave Hukman (right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains and the birds to glorify Our Praises along with Dawud (David), And it was We Who were the doers (of all these things).

فَفَهَّمْنَاهَا سُلَيْمَانَ ۚ

And We made Sulaiman (Solomon) to understand (the case),

وَكُلًّا آتَيْنَا حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا ۚ

[21:80] And We taught him the making of metal coats of mail (for battles), to protect you in your fighting. Are you then grateful?

لِتُحْصِنَكُم مِّن بَأْسِكُمْ ۖ

فَهَلْ أَنتُمْ شَاكِرُونَ

[21:81] And to Sulaiman (Solomon) (We subjected) the wind strongly raging, running by his command towards the land which We had blessed. And of everything We are the All-Knower.

وَلِسُلَيْمَانَ

And to Sulaiman (Solomon)

الرِّيحَ عَاصِفَةً

(We subjected) the wind strongly raging

تَجْرِي بِأَمْرِهِ

running by his command

إِلَى الْأَرْضِ الَّتِي بَارَكْنَا فِيهَا ۚ

towards the land which We had blessed

وَكُنَّا بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَالِمِينَ

And of everything We are the All-Knower

وَلِسُلَيْمَانَ

[21:82] And of the Shayatin (devils) (from the jinns) were some who dived for him, and did other work besides that; and it was We Who guarded them.

وَمِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ

And of the Shayatin (devils)

مَن يَغُوصُونَ لَهُ

were some who dived for him

وَيَعْمَلُونَ عَمَلًا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ

and did other work besides that

وَكُنَّا لَهُمْ حَافِظِينَ

and it was We Who guarded them

وَمِنَ

[21:83] And (remember) Ayub (Job), when he cried to his Lord: "Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy."

۞ وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ

And (remember) Ayub (Job), when he cried to his Lord:

أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ

Verily, distress has seized me,

وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

۞ وَأَيُّوبَ

[21:84] So We answered his call, and We removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his family to him (that he had lost), and the like thereof along with them, as a mercy from Ourselves and a Reminder for all who worship Us.

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ

So We answered his call,

فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِ مِن ضُرٍّ ۖ

and We removed the distress that was on him,

وَآتَيْنَاهُ أَهْلَهُ

and We restored his family to him (that he had lost),

وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ

and the like thereof along with them,

رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا

as a mercy from Ourselves

[21:85] And (remember) Isma'il (Ishmael), and Idris (Enoch) and Dhul-Kifl (Isaiah), all were from among As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ

And (remember) Isma'il (Ishmael),

وَإِدْرِيسَ

and Idris (Enoch),

وَذَا الْكِفْلِ ۖ

and Dhul-Kifl (Isaiah),

كُلٌّ مِّنَ الصَّابِرِينَ

all were from among As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.).

وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ

وَذَا

[21:86] And We admitted them to Our Mercy. Verily, they were of the righteous.

[21:87] And (remember) Dhan-Nun (Jonah), when he went off in anger, and imagined that We shall not punish him (i.e. the calamites which had befallen him)! But he cried through the darkness (saying): La ilaha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) are You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers."

وَذَا النُّونِ

And (remember) Dhan-Nun (Jonah)

إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا

when he went off in anger

فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ

and imagined that We shall not punish him

فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ

But he cried through the darkness

أَن لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ

saying: La ilaha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)]

سُبْحَانَكَ

Glorified (and Exalted) are You

إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers

وَذَا

[21:88] So We answered his call, and delivered him from the distress. And thus We do deliver the believers (who believe in the Oneness of Allah, abstain from evil and work righteousness).

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ

So We answered his call,

وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ ۚ

and delivered him from the distress.

وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُنجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

And thus We do deliver the believers (who believe in the Oneness of Allah, abstain from evil and work righteousness).

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا

[21:89] And (remember) Zakariya (Zachariah), when he cried to his Lord: "O My Lord! Leave me not single (childless), though You are the Best of the inheritors."

وَزَكَرِيَّا

And (remember) Zakariya (Zachariah)

إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ

when he cried to his Lord

رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا

"O My Lord! Leave me not single (childless)"

وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُ يَحْيَىٰ وَأَصْلَحْنَا لَهُ زَوْجَهُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًا وَرَهَبًا ۖ وَكَانُوا لَنَا خَاشِعِينَ ٩٠

[21:90] So We answered his call, and We bestowed upon him Yahya (John), and cured his wife (to bear a child) for him. Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us.

فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ

So We answered his call,

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُ يَحْيَىٰ

and We bestowed upon him Yahya (John),

وَأَصْلَحْنَا لَهُ زَوْجَهُ ۚ

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ

[21:91] And (remember) she who guarded her chastity [Virgin Maryam (Mary)], We breathed into (the sleeves of) her (shirt or garment) [through Our Ruh - Jibrael (Gabriel)], and We made her and her son ['Iesa (Jesus)] a sign for Al-'Alamin (the mankind and jinns).

وَالَّتِي أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا

And (remember) she who guarded her chastity [Virgin Maryam (Mary)]

فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهَا مِن رُّوحِنَا

We breathed into (the sleeves of) her (shirt or garment) [through Our Ruh - Jibrael (Gabriel)]

وَجَعَلْنَاهَا وَابْنَهَا آيَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

[21:92] Truly! This, your Ummah [Sharia or religion (Islamic Monotheism)] is one religion, and I am your Lord, therefore worship Me (Alone). [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

إِنَّ هَٰذِهِ

Truly! This,

أُمَّتُكُمْ

your Ummah

أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً

is one religion,

وَأَنَا رَبُّكُمْ

and I am your Lord,

فَاعْبُدُونِ

therefore worship Me (Alone).

[21:93] But they have broken up and differed as regards their religion among themselves. (And) they all shall return to Us.

[21:94] So whoever does righteous good deeds while he is a believer (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), his efforts will not be rejected. Verily! We record it in his Book of deeds.

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ الصَّالِحَاتِ

So whoever does righteous good deeds

وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ

while he is a believer (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism),

فَلَا كُفْرَانَ لِسَعْيِهِ

his efforts will not be rejected.

وَإِنَّا لَهُ كَاتِبُونَ

Verily! We record it in his Book of deeds.

فَمَن

[21:95] And a ban is laid on every town (population) which We have destroyed that they shall not return (to this world again, nor repent to Us).

وَحَرَامٌ عَلَىٰ قَرْيَةٍ

أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ

[21:96] Until, when Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog) are let loose (from their barrier), and they swiftly swarm from every mound.

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فُتِحَتْ

Until, when (they are) let loose

يَأْجُوجُ وَمَأْجُوجُ

Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog)

وَهُم مِّن كُلِّ حَدَبٍ يَنسِلُونَ

and they swiftly swarm from every mound.

[21:97] And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (of fulfillment). Then (when mankind is resurrected from their graves), you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly stare in horror. (They will say): "Woe to us! We were indeed heedless of this; nay, but we were Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.)."

وَاقْتَرَبَ الْوَعْدُ الْحَقُّ

فَإِذَا هِيَ شَاخِصَةٌ أَبْصَارُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا

[21:98] Certainly! You (disbelievers) and that which you are worshipping now besides Allah, are (but) fuel for Hell! (Surely), you will enter it.

إِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ

Certainly! You (disbelievers) and that which you are worshipping

مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ

now besides Allah,

حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ

are (but) fuel for Hell!

أَنتُمْ لَهَا وَارِدُونَ

(Surely), you will enter it.

إِنَّكُمْ

[21:99] Had these (idols, etc.) been aliha (gods), they would not have entered there (Hell), and all of them will abide therein.

لَوْ كَانَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ آلِهَةً

Had these (idols, etc.) been aliha (gods),

مَّا وَرَدُوهَا ۖ

they would not have entered there (Hell),

وَكُلٌّ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ

and all of them will abide therein.

[21:101] Verily those for whom the good has preceded from Us, they will be removed far therefrom (Hell) [e.g. 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary); 'Uzair (Ezra), etc.].

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ سَبَقَتْ لَهُم مِّنَّا الْحُسْنَىٰ

Verily those for whom the good has preceded from Us

[21:103] The greatest terror (on the Day of Resurrection) will not grieve them, and the angels will meet them, (with the greeting): "This is your Day which you were promised."

لَا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الْأَكْبَرُ

The greatest terror (on the Day of Resurrection) will not grieve them

وَتَتَلَقَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ

and the angels will meet them

هَٰذَا يَوْمُكُمُ الَّذِي كُنتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ

(with the greeting): 'This is your Day which you were promised.'

[21:104] And (remember) the Day when We shall roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up for books, as We began the first creation, We shall repeat it, (it is) a promise binding upon Us. Truly, We shall do it.

يَوْمَ نَطْوِي السَّمَاءَ

And (remember) the Day when We shall roll up the heavens

كَطَيِّ السِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ ۚ

like a scroll rolled up for books,

كَمَا بَدَأْنَا أَوَّلَ خَلْقٍ

as We began the first creation,

نُّعِيدُهُ ۚ

We shall repeat it,

وَعْدًا عَلَيْنَا ۚ

(it is) a promise binding upon Us.

إِنَّا كُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ

Truly, We shall do it.

[21:105] And indeed We have written in Zabur (Psalms) [i.e. all the revealed Holy Books the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel), the Quran] after (We have already written in) Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz (the Book, that is in the heaven with Allah), that My righteous slaves shall inherit the land (i.e. the land of Paradise).

وَلَقَدْ كَتَبْنَا

And indeed We have written

فِي الزَّبُورِ

in Zabur (Psalms)

مِن بَعْدِ الذِّكْرِ

after (We have already written in)

أَنَّ الْأَرْضَ يَرِثُهَا

that the land shall be inherited

عِبَادِيَ الصَّالِحُونَ

by My righteous slaves

وَلَقَدْ

إِنَّ فِي هَٰذَا لَبَلَاغًا لِّقَوْمٍ عَابِدِينَ ١٠٦

[21:106] Verily, in this (the Quran) there is a plain Message for people who worship Allah (i.e. the true, real believers of Islamic Monotheism who act practically on the Quran and the Sunnah legal ways of the Prophet SAW).

إِنَّ فِي هَٰذَا

Verily, in this

لَبَلَاغًا

there is a plain Message

لِّقَوْمٍ عَابِدِينَ

for people who worship Allah (i.e. the true, real believers of Islamic Monotheism who act practically on the Quran and the Sunnah legal ways of the Prophet SAW)

إِنَّ

لِّقَوْمٍ

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ ١٠٧

[21:107] And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) not but as a mercy for the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ

And We have sent you

إِلَّا رَحْمَةً

not but as a mercy

لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

for the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)

وَمَا

And not · Root: م ا · Particle

أَرْسَلْنَاكَ

إِلَّا

رَحْمَةً

(as) a mercy · Root: ر ح م · Noun

لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

قُلْ إِنَّمَا يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَا إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ ١٠٨

[21:108] Say (O Muhammad SAW): "It is revealed to me that your Ilah (God) is only one Ilah (God - Allah). Will you then submit to His Will (become Muslims and stop worshipping others besides Allah)?"

قُلْ

Say (O Muhammad SAW):

إِنَّمَا يُوحَىٰ إِلَيَّ

It is revealed to me that

أَنَّمَا إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ ۖ

your Ilah (God) is only one Ilah (God - Allah).

فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ

Will you then submit to His Will (become Muslims and stop worshipping others besides Allah)?

قُلْ

إِلَيَّ

فَهَلْ

أَنتُم

مُّسْلِمُونَ

submit (to Him) · Root: س ل م · Noun

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَقُلْ آذَنتُكُمْ عَلَىٰ سَوَاءٍ ۖ وَإِنْ أَدْرِي أَقَرِيبٌ أَم بَعِيدٌ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ ١٠٩

[21:109] But if they (disbelievers, idolaters, Jews, Christians, polytheists, etc.) turn away (from Islamic Monotheism) say (to them O Muhammad SAW): "I give you a notice (of war as) to be known to us all alike. And I know not whether that which you are promised (i.e. the torment or the Day of Resurrection) is near or far."

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا

But if they turn away

فَقُلْ آذَنتُكُمْ

say (to them O Muhammad SAW): 'I give you a notice'

عَلَىٰ سَوَاءٍ ۖ

(of war as) to be known to us all alike.

وَإِنْ أَدْرِي

And I know not

أَقَرِيبٌ أَم بَعِيدٌ

whether that which you are promised is near or far

مَّا تُوعَدُونَ

(i.e. the torment or the Day of Resurrection)

فَإِن

آذَنتُكُمْ

أَقَرِيبٌ

بَعِيدٌ

مَّا

تُوعَدُونَ

you are promised · Root: و ع د · Verb

إِنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ الْجَهْرَ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَكْتُمُونَ ١١٠

[21:110] (Say O Muhammad SAW) Verily, He (Allah) knows that which is spoken aloud (openly) and that which you conceal.

إِنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ

Verily, He (Allah) knows

الْجَهْرَ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ

that which is spoken aloud (openly)

وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَكْتُمُونَ

and that which you conceal.

إِنَّهُ

Indeed, He · Particle

الْقَوْلِ

وَإِنْ أَدْرِي لَعَلَّهُ فِتْنَةٌ لَّكُمْ وَمَتَاعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ ١١١

[21:111] And I know not, perhaps it may be a trial for you, and an enjoyment for a while.

وَإِنْ أَدْرِي

And I know not

لَعَلَّهُ فِتْنَةٌ لَّكُمْ

perhaps it may be a trial for you

وَمَتَاعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ

and an enjoyment for a while

وَإِنْ

فِتْنَةٌ

قَالَ رَبِّ احْكُم بِالْحَقِّ ۗ وَرَبُّنَا الرَّحْمَٰنُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ ١١٢

[21:112] He (Muhammad SAW) said:"My Lord! Judge You in truth! Our Lord is the Most Beneficent, Whose Help is to be sought against that which you attribute (unto Allah that He has offspring, and unto Muhammad SAW that he is a sorcerer, and unto the Quran that it is poetry, etc.)!"

قَالَ رَبِّ احْكُم بِالْحَقِّ ۗ

He (Muhammad SAW) said: "My Lord! Judge You in truth!"

وَرَبُّنَا الرَّحْمَٰنُ

Our Lord is the Most Beneficent,

الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ

Whose Help is to be sought against that which you attribute (unto Allah that He has offspring, and unto Muhammad SAW that he is a sorcerer, and unto the Quran that it is poetry, etc.)!

قَالَ

بِالْحَقِّ ۗ

وَرَبُّنَا

الْمُسْتَعَانُ

the One Whose help is sought · Root: ع و ن · Noun

عَلَىٰ

مَا

تَصِفُونَ
