ذِكْرُ رَحْمَتِ رَبِّكَ عَبْدَهُ زَكَرِيَّا ٢

(This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah).

ذِكْرُ رَحْمَتِ رَبِّكَ
(This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord
عَبْدَهُ زَكَرِيَّا
to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah)

إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا ٣

When he called out his Lord (Allah) a call in secret,

إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ
When he called out his Lord (Allah)
نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا
a call in secret

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي وَهَنَ الْعَظْمُ مِنِّي وَاشْتَعَلَ الرَّأْسُ شَيْبًا وَلَمْ أَكُن بِدُعَائِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّا ٤

Saying: "My Lord! Indeed my bones have grown feeble, and grey hair has spread on my head, And I have never been unblest in my invocation to You, O my Lord!

قَالَ رَبِّ
Saying: 'My Lord!
إِنِّي وَهَنَ الْعَظْمُ مِنِّي
Indeed my bones have grown feeble,
وَاشْتَعَلَ الرَّأْسُ شَيْبًا
and grey hair has spread on my head,
وَلَمْ أَكُن بِدُعَائِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّا
And I have never been unblest in my invocation to You, O my Lord!

وَإِنِّي خِفْتُ الْمَوَالِيَ مِن وَرَائِي وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتِي عَاقِرًا فَهَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا ٥

"And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir,

وَإِنِّي خِفْتُ الْمَوَالِيَ مِن وَرَائِي
And Verily! I fear my relatives after me,
وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتِي عَاقِرًا
since my wife is barren.
فَهَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا
So give me from Yourself an heir,

يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَاجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا ٦

"Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!".

يَرِثُنِي
Who shall inherit me,
وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ ۖ
and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob)
وَاجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا
And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!

يَا زَكَرِيَّا إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ اسْمُهُ يَحْيَىٰ لَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُ مِن قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا ٧

(Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)."

يَا زَكَرِيَّا إِنَّا
O Zakariya (Zachariah)!
نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ
Verily, We give you the glad tidings
اسْمُهُ يَحْيَىٰ لَمْ
of a son, His name will be Yahya (John).
نَجْعَل لَّهُ مِن قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا
We have given that name to none before (him).

قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَامٌ وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتِي عَاقِرًا وَقَدْ بَلَغْتُ مِنَ الْكِبَرِ عِتِيًّا ٨

He said: "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age."

قَالَ رَبِّ
He said: 'My Lord!
أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَامٌ
How can I have a son,
وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتِي عَاقِرًا
when my wife is barren,
وَقَدْ بَلَغْتُ مِنَ الْكِبَرِ عِتِيًّا
and I have reached the extreme old age.

قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ قَالَ رَبُّكَ هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٌ وَقَدْ خَلَقْتُكَ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ تَكُ شَيْئًا ٩

He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!"

قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ
He said: 'So (it will be).
قَالَ رَبُّكَ
Your Lord says;
هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٌ
It is easy for Me.
وَقَدْ خَلَقْتُكَ مِن قَبْلُ
Certainly I have created you before,
وَلَمْ تَكُ شَيْئًا
when you had been nothing!

قَالَ رَبِّ اجْعَل لِّي آيَةً ۚ قَالَ آيَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ النَّاسَ ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ سَوِيًّا ١٠

[Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect."

قَالَ رَبِّ اجْعَل لِّي آيَةً ۚ
My Lord! Appoint for me a sign.
قَالَ
He said:
آيَتُكَ
Your sign is that
أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ النَّاسَ
you shall not speak unto mankind
ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ سَوِيًّا
for three nights, though having no bodily defect.

فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ مِنَ الْمِحْرَابِ فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَيْهِمْ أَن سَبِّحُوا بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا ١١

Then he came out to his people from Al-Mihrab (a praying place or a private room, etc.), he told them by signs to glorify Allah's Praises in the morning and in the afternoon.

فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ
Then he came out to his people
مِنَ الْمِحْرَابِ
from Al-Mihrab (a praying place or a private room, etc.)
فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَيْهِمْ
he told them by signs
أَن سَبِّحُوا
to glorify Allah's Praises
بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا
in the morning and in the afternoon
