فَأَجَاءَهَا الْمَخَاضُ إِلَىٰ جِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ قَالَتْ يَا لَيْتَنِي مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَٰذَا وَكُنتُ نَسْيًا مَّنسِيًّا ٢٣

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She said: "Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!"

فَأَجَاءَهَا الْمَخَاضُ

And the pains of childbirth drove her

إِلَىٰ جِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ

to the trunk of a date-palm.

قَالَتْ

She said:

يَا لَيْتَنِي مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَٰذَا وَكُنتُ

"Would that I had died before this,

نَسْيًا مَّنسِيًّا

and had been forgotten and out of sight!"

فَنَادَاهَا مِن تَحْتِهَا أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا ٢٤

Then [the babe 'Iesa (Jesus) or Jibrael (Gabriel)] cried unto her from below her, saying: "Grieve not! Your Lord has provided a water stream under you;

فَنَادَاهَا مِن تَحْتِهَا

Then [the babe 'Iesa (Jesus) or Jibrael (Gabriel)] cried unto her from below her,

أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي

saying: 'Grieve not!

قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا

Your Lord has provided a water stream under you;

وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا ٢٥

"And shake the trunk of date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you."

وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ

And shake towards you

بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ

the trunk of the date-palm

تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ

it will let fall upon you

رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا

fresh ripe-dates

فَكُلِي وَاشْرَبِي وَقَرِّي عَيْنًا ۖ فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ الْبَشَرِ أَحَدًا فَقُولِي إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ صَوْمًا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ الْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا ٢٦

"So eat and drink and be glad, and if you see any human being, say: 'Verily! I have vowed a fast unto the Most Beneficent (Allah) so I shall not speak to any human being this day. ”

فَكُلِي وَاشْرَبِي وَقَرِّي عَيْنًا ۖ

So eat and drink and be glad,

فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ الْبَشَرِ أَحَدًا

and if you see any human being,

فَقُولِي إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ صَوْمًا

say: 'Verily! I have vowed a fast unto the Most Beneficent (Allah)

فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ الْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا

so I shall not speak to any human being this day.
