وَإِذَا مَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَٰذِهِ إِيمَانًا ۚ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ ١٢٤

And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from the Quran), some of them (hypocrites) say: "Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?" As for those who believe, it has increased their Faith, and they rejoice.

وَإِذَا مَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ

And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from the Quran),

فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ

some of them (hypocrites) say:

أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَٰذِهِ إِيمَانًا ۚ

"Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?"

فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

As for those who believe,

فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا

it has increased their Faith,

وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

and they rejoice.

وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ ١٢٥

But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt, and they die while they are disbelievers.

وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ

But as for those in whose hearts is a disease

فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ

it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion

وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ

and they die while they are disbelievers.

أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ ١٢٦

See they not that they are tried once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine, etc.)? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it).

أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ

See they not

أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ

that they are tried once or twice every year

ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ

Yet, they turn not in repentance

وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ

nor do they learn a lesson (from it)

وَإِذَا مَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَاكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ انصَرَفُوا ۚ صَرَفَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ ١٢٧

And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from the Quran), they look at one another (saying): "Does any one see you?" Then they turn away. Allah has turned their hearts (from the light) because they are a people that understand not.

وَإِذَا مَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ

And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from the Quran),

نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ

they look at one another

هَلْ يَرَاكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ

(saying): 'Does any one see you?'

ثُمَّ انصَرَفُوا ۚ

Then they turn away.

صَرَفَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم

Allah has turned their hearts (from the light)

بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ

because they are a people that understand not.
