لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَّاتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَٰكِن بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّقَّةُ ۚ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَوِ اسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ ٤٢

Had it been a near gain (booty in front of them) and an easy journey, they would have followed you, but the distance (Tabuk expedition) was long for them, and they would swear by Allah, "If we only could, we would certainly have come forth with you." They destroy their ownselves, and Allah knows that they are liars.

لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا

Had it been a near gain

وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا

and an easy journey

لَّاتَّبَعُوكَ

they would have followed you

وَلَٰكِن بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّقَّةُ ۚ

but the distance was long for them

وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ

and they would swear by Allah

لَوِ اسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ

If we only could, we would certainly have come forth with you

يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ

They destroy their own selves

وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ

and Allah knows that they are liars

عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنكَ لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكَ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَتَعْلَمَ الْكَاذِبِينَ ٤٣

May Allah forgive you (O Muhammad SAW). Why did you grant them leave (for remaining behind, you should have persisted as regards your order to them to proceed on Jihad), until those who told the truth were seen by you in a clear light, and you had known the liars?

عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنكَ

May Allah forgive you (O Muhammad SAW)

لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمْ

Why did you grant them leave

حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكَ

until those who told the truth were seen by you

الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا

in a clear light, and you had known the liars

وَتَعْلَمَ الْكَاذِبِينَ

لَا يَسْتَأْذِنُكَ الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَن يُجَاهِدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالْمُتَّقِينَ ٤٤

Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask your leave to be exempted from fighting with their properties and their lives, and Allah is the All-Knower of Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2).

لَا يَسْتَأْذِنُكَ الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ

Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask your leave

أَن يُجَاهِدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ

to be exempted from fighting with their properties and their lives

وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالْمُتَّقِينَ

and Allah is the All-Knower of Al-Muttaqun (the pious)

إِنَّمَا يَسْتَأْذِنُكَ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَارْتَابَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِي رَيْبِهِمْ يَتَرَدَّدُونَ ٤٥

It is only those who believe not in Allah and the Last Day and whose hearts are in doubt that ask your leave (to be exempted from Jihad). So in their doubts they waver.

إِنَّمَا يَسْتَأْذِنُكَ

It is only those who ask your leave

الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ

who believe not in Allah and the Last Day

وَارْتَابَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ

and whose hearts are in doubt

فَهُمْ فِي رَيْبِهِمْ يَتَرَدَّدُونَ

that waver in their doubts.

۞ وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا الْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا لَهُ عُدَّةً وَلَٰكِن كَرِهَ اللَّهُ انبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ اقْعُدُوا مَعَ الْقَاعِدِينَ ٤٦

And if they had intended to march out, certainly, they would have made some preparation for it, but Allah was averse to their being sent forth, so He made them lag behind, and it was said (to them), "Sit you among those who sit (at home)."

۞ وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا الْخُرُوجَ

And if they had intended to march out,

لَأَعَدُّوا لَهُ عُدَّةً

certainly, they would have made some preparation for it,

وَلَٰكِن كَرِهَ اللَّهُ انبِعَاثَهُمْ

but Allah was averse to their being sent forth,

فَثَبَّطَهُمْ

so He made them lag behind,

وَقِيلَ اقْعُدُوا مَعَ الْقَاعِدِينَ

and it was said (to them), 'Sit you among those who sit (at home).'

لَوْ خَرَجُوا فِيكُم مَّا زَادُوكُمْ إِلَّا خَبَالًا وَلَأَوْضَعُوا خِلَالَكُمْ يَبْغُونَكُمُ الْفِتْنَةَ وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّاعُونَ لَهُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ ٤٧

Had they marched out with you, they would have added to you nothing except disorder, and they would have hurried about in your midst (spreading corruption) and sowing sedition among you, and there are some among you who would have listened to them. And Allah is the All-Knower of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).

لَوْ خَرَجُوا فِيكُم

Had they marched out with you

مَّا زَادُوكُمْ إِلَّا خَبَالًا

they would have added to you nothing except disorder

وَلَأَوْضَعُوا خِلَالَكُمْ

and they would have hurried about in your midst

يَبْغُونَكُمُ الْفِتْنَةَ

(spreading corruption) and sowing sedition among you

وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّاعُونَ لَهُمْ ۗ

and there are some among you who would have listened to them

وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ

And Allah is the All-Knower of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.)

لَقَدِ ابْتَغَوُا الْفِتْنَةَ مِن قَبْلُ وَقَلَّبُوا لَكَ الْأُمُورَ حَتَّىٰ جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَظَهَرَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ وَهُمْ كَارِهُونَ ٤٨

Verily, they had plotted sedition before, and had upset matters for you, - until the truth (victory) came and the Decree of Allah (His Religion, Islam) became manifest though they hated it.

لَقَدِ ابْتَغَوُا الْفِتْنَةَ مِن قَبْلُ

Verily, they had plotted sedition before,

وَقَلَّبُوا لَكَ الْأُمُورَ

and had upset matters for you,

حَتَّىٰ جَاءَ الْحَقُّ

until the truth (victory) came

وَظَهَرَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ

and the Decree of Allah (His Religion, Islam) became manifest

وَهُمْ كَارِهُونَ

though they hated it.

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ ائْذَن لِّي وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي ۚ أَلَا فِي الْفِتْنَةِ سَقَطُوا ۗ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ ٤٩

And among them is he who says:"Grant me leave (to be exempted from Jihad) and put me not into trial." Surely, they have fallen into trial. And verily, Hell is surrounding the disbelievers.

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ

And among them is he who says:

ائْذَن لِّي وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي ۚ

"Grant me leave (to be exempted from Jihad) and put me not into trial."

أَلَا فِي الْفِتْنَةِ سَقَطُوا ۗ

Surely, they have fallen into trial.

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ

And verily, Hell is surrounding the disbelievers.

إِن تُصِبْكَ حَسَنَةٌ تَسُؤْهُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْكَ مُصِيبَةٌ يَقُولُوا قَدْ أَخَذْنَا أَمْرَنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَيَتَوَلَّوا وَّهُمْ فَرِحُونَ ٥٠

If good befalls you (O Muhammad SAW), it grieves them, but if a calamity overtakes you, they say: "We took our precaution beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing.

إِن تُصِبْكَ حَسَنَةٌ

If good befalls you (O Muhammad SAW),

تَسُؤْهُمْ ۖ

it grieves them,

وَإِن تُصِبْكَ مُصِيبَةٌ

but if a calamity overtakes you,

يَقُولُوا

they say:

قَدْ أَخَذْنَا أَمْرَنَا مِن قَبْلُ

"We took our precaution beforehand,"

وَيَتَوَلَّوا

and they turn away

وَّهُمْ فَرِحُونَ

rejoicing.

قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَا إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَانَا ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٥١

Say: "Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector)." And in Allah let the believers put their trust.

قُل

Say:

لَّن يُصِيبَنَا إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَنَا

Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us.

هُوَ مَوْلَانَا ۚ

He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector).

وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

And in Allah let the believers put their trust.

قُلْ هَلْ تَرَبَّصُونَ بِنَا إِلَّا إِحْدَى الْحُسْنَيَيْنِ ۖ وَنَحْنُ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمْ أَن يُصِيبَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِعَذَابٍ مِّنْ عِندِهِ أَوْ بِأَيْدِينَا ۖ فَتَرَبَّصُوا إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّتَرَبِّصُونَ ٥٢

Say: "Do you wait for us (anything) except one of the two best things (martyrdom or victory); while we await for you either that Allah will afflict you with a punishment from Himself or at our hands. So wait, we too are waiting with you."

قُلْ هَلْ تَرَبَّصُونَ بِنَا إِلَّا إِحْدَى الْحُسْنَيَيْنِ ۖ

Say: 'Do you wait for us (anything) except one of the two best things (martyrdom or victory);

وَنَحْنُ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمْ

while we await for you

أَن يُصِيبَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِعَذَابٍ مِّنْ عِندِهِ أَوْ بِأَيْدِينَا ۖ

either that Allah will afflict you with a punishment from Himself or at our hands.

فَتَرَبَّصُوا

So wait,

إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّتَرَبِّصُونَ

we too are waiting with you.

قُلْ أَنفِقُوا طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمْ ۖ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ ٥٣

Say: "Spend (in Allah's Cause) willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. Verily, you are ever a people who are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)."

قُلْ أَنفِقُوا

Say: 'Spend (in Allah's Cause)'

طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا

willingly or unwillingly

لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمْ ۖ

it will not be accepted from you.

إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ

Verily, you are ever

قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ

a people who are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ أَن تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَاتُهُمْ إِلَّا أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ وَلَا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَىٰ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَارِهُونَ ٥٤

And nothing prevents their contributions from being accepted from them except that they disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger (Muhammad SAW); and that they came not to As-Salat (the prayer) except in a lazy state; and that they offer not contributions but unwillingly.

وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ

And nothing prevents them

أَن تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَاتُهُمْ

from their contributions being accepted

إِلَّا أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ

except that they disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger (Muhammad SAW);

وَلَا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَىٰ

and that they come not to As-Salat (the prayer) except in a lazy state;

وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَارِهُونَ

and that they offer not contributions but unwillingly.

فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ ٥٥

So let not their wealth or their children amaze you (O Muhammad SAW); in reality Allah's Plan is to punish them with these things in the life of the this world, and that their souls shall depart (die) while they are disbelievers.

فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ

So let not their wealth amaze you

وَلَا أَوْلَادُهُمْ ۚ

or their children

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ

in reality Allah's Plan is

لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا

to punish them with these things

فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا

in the life of this world

وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ

and that their souls shall depart

وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ

while they are disbelievers

وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ ٥٦

They swear by Allah that they are truly of you while they are not of you, but they are a people (hypocrites) who are afraid (that you may kill them).

وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ

They swear by Allah

إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ

that they are truly of you

وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ

while they are not of you

وَلَٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ

but they are a people (hypocrites) who are afraid (that you may kill them)

لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَأً أَوْ مَغَارَاتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا لَّوَلَّوْا إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ ٥٧

Should they find a refuge, or caves, or a place of concealment, they would turn straightway thereto with a swift rush.

لَوْ يَجِدُونَ

Should they find

مَلْجَأً أَوْ مَغَارَاتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا

a refuge, or caves, or a place of concealment

لَّوَلَّوْا إِلَيْهِ

they would turn straightway thereto

وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ

with a swift rush

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَلْمِزُكَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ فَإِنْ أُعْطُوا مِنْهَا رَضُوا وَإِن لَّمْ يُعْطَوْا مِنْهَا إِذَا هُمْ يَسْخَطُونَ ٥٨

And of them are some who accuse you (O Muhammad SAW) in the matter of (the distribution of) the alms. If they are given part thereof, they are pleased, but if they are not given thereof, behold! They are enraged!

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَلْمِزُكَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ

And of them are some who accuse you (O Muhammad SAW) in the matter of (the distribution of) the alms.

فَإِنْ أُعْطُوا مِنْهَا رَضُوا

If they are given part thereof, they are pleased,

وَإِن لَّمْ يُعْطَوْا مِنْهَا

but if they are not given thereof,

إِذَا هُمْ يَسْخَطُونَ

behold! They are enraged!

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ رَضُوا مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ سَيُؤْتِينَا اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ وَرَسُولُهُ إِنَّا إِلَى اللَّهِ رَاغِبُونَ ٥٩

Would that they were contented with what Allah and His Messenger (SAW) gave them and had said: "Allah is Sufficient for us. Allah will give us of His Bounty, and (also) His Messenger (from alms, etc.). We implore Allah (to enrich us)."

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ رَضُوا

Would that they were contented

مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

with what Allah and His Messenger (SAW) gave them

وَقَالُوا

and had said:

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ

"Allah is Sufficient for us.

سَيُؤْتِينَا اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ وَرَسُولُهُ

Allah will give us of His Bounty, and (also) His Messenger (from alms, etc.).

إِنَّا إِلَى اللَّهِ رَاغِبُونَ

We implore Allah (to enrich us).

۞ إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَالْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَالْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ وَالْغَارِمِينَ وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ ۖ فَرِيضَةً مِّنَ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ٦٠

As-Sadaqat (here it means Zakat) are only for the Fuqara' (poor), and Al-Masakin (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds); and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah's Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun - those fighting in the holy wars), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.

۞ إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ

As-Sadaqat (here it means Zakat) are only for

لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ

the Fuqara' (poor), and Al-Masakin (the poor)

وَالْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا

and those employed to collect (the funds);

وَالْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ

and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam);

وَفِي الرِّقَابِ

and to free the captives;

وَالْغَارِمِينَ

and for those in debt;

وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

and for Allah's Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun - those fighting in the holy wars),

وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ ۖ

and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything);

فَرِيضَةً مِّنَ اللَّهِ ۗ

a duty imposed by Allah.

وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.

وَمِنْهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ النَّبِيَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ ۚ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَّكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ ۚ وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ٦١

And among them are men who hurt the Prophet (Muhammad SAW) and say: "He is (lending his) ear (to every news)." Say: "He listens to what is best for you; he believes in Allah; has faith in the believers; and is a mercy to those of you who believe." But those who hurt Allah's Messenger (Muhammad SAW) will have a painful torment.

وَمِنْهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ النَّبِيَّ

And among them are men who hurt the Prophet (Muhammad SAW)

وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ ۚ

and say: 'He is (lending his) ear (to every news).'

قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَّكُمْ

Say: 'He listens to what is best for you;

يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ

he believes in Allah;

وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

has faith in the believers;

وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ ۚ

and is a mercy to those of you who believe.'

وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ

But those who hurt Allah's Messenger (Muhammad SAW)

لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

will have a painful torment.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَاللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ ٦٢

They swear by Allah to you (Muslims) in order to please you, but it is more fitting that they should please Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), if they are believers.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ

They swear by Allah to you (Muslims)

لِيُرْضُوكُمْ

in order to please you

وَاللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ

but it is more fitting that they should please Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW)

إِن كَانُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ

if they are believers

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوا أَنَّهُ مَن يُحَادِدِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَأَنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدًا فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْخِزْيُ الْعَظِيمُ ٦٣

Know they not that whoever opposes and shows hostility to Allah and His Messenger (SAW), certainly for him will be the Fire of Hell to abide therein. That is extreme disgrace.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوا

Know they not

أَنَّهُ مَن يُحَادِدِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ

that whoever opposes and shows hostility to Allah and His Messenger (SAW)

فَأَنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ

certainly for him will be the Fire of Hell

خَالِدًا فِيهَا ۚ

to abide therein.

ذَٰلِكَ الْخِزْيُ الْعَظِيمُ

That is extreme disgrace.

يَحْذَرُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٌ تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ قُلِ اسْتَهْزِئُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَ ٦٤

The hypocrites fear lest a Surah (chapter of the Quran) should be revealed about them, showing them what is in their hearts. Say: "(Go ahead and) mock! But certainly Allah will bring to light all that you fear."

يَحْذَرُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ

The hypocrites fear

أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٌ

lest a Surah (chapter of the Quran) should be revealed about them

تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ

showing them what is in their hearts

قُلِ اسْتَهْزِئُوا

Say: '(Go ahead and) mock!'

إِنَّ اللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَ

But certainly Allah will bring to light all that you fear

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ٦٥

If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (SAW) that you were mocking?"

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ

If you ask them (about this),

لَيَقُولُنَّ

they declare:

إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ

"We were only talking idly and joking."

قُلْ

Say:

أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ

Was it at Allah, and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (SAW)

كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ

that you were mocking?

لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ ۚ إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَائِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَائِفَةً بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ ٦٦

Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.).

لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا

Make no excuse;

قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ ۚ

you have disbelieved after you had believed.

إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَائِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ

If We pardon some of you,

نُعَذِّبْ طَائِفَةً بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ

We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.).

الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّن بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ نَسُوا اللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ هُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ ٦٧

The hypocrites, men and women, are from one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism of all kinds and all that Islam has forbidden), and forbid (people) from Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allah's Cause) alms, etc.]. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتُ

The hypocrites, men and women,

بَعْضُهُم مِّن بَعْضٍ ۚ

are from one another,

يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمُنكَرِ

they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar

وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِ

and forbid (people) from Al-Ma'ruf,

وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ

and they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allah's Cause) alms, etc.].

نَسُوا اللَّهَ

They have forgotten Allah,

فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ

so He has forgotten them.

إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ هُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ

Verily, the hypocrites are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتِ وَالْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ هِيَ حَسْبُهُمْ ۚ وَلَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ ٦٨

Allah has promised the hypocrites; men and women, and the disbelievers, the Fire of Hell, therein shall they abide. It will suffice them. Allah has cursed them and for them is the lasting torment.

وَعَدَ اللَّهُ

Allah has promised

الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتِ وَالْكُفَّارَ

the hypocrites; men and women, and the disbelievers,

نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ

the Fire of Hell,

خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ

therein shall they abide.

هِيَ حَسْبُهُمْ ۚ

It will suffice them.

وَلَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ

Allah has cursed them

وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ

and for them is the lasting torment.

كَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُوا أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَالًا وَأَوْلَادًا فَاسْتَمْتَعُوا بِخَلَاقِهِمْ فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَاقِكُمْ كَمَا اسْتَمْتَعَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَاقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَالَّذِي خَاضُوا ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ ٦٩

Like those before you, they were mightier than you in power, and more abundant in wealth and children. They had enjoyed their portion awhile, so enjoy your portion awhile as those before you enjoyed their portion awhile; and you indulged in play and pastime (and in telling lies against Allah and His Messenger Muhammad SAW) as they indulged in play and pastime. Such are they whose deeds are in vain in this world and in the Hereafter. Such are they who are the losers.

كَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ

Like those before you,

كَانُوا أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً

they were mightier than you in power,

وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَالًا وَأَوْلَادًا

and more abundant in wealth and children.

فَاسْتَمْتَعُوا بِخَلَاقِهِمْ

They had enjoyed their portion awhile,

فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَاقِكُمْ

so enjoy your portion awhile

كَمَا اسْتَمْتَعَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَاقِهِمْ

as those before you enjoyed their portion awhile;

وَخُضْتُمْ كَالَّذِي خَاضُوا ۚ

and you indulged in play and pastime (and in telling lies against Allah and His Messenger Muhammad SAW) as they indulged in play and pastime.

أُولَٰئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۖ

Such are they whose deeds are in vain in this world and in the Hereafter.

وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ

Such are they who are the losers.

أَلَمْ يَأْتِهِمْ نَبَأُ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَأَصْحَابِ مَدْيَنَ وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَاتِ ۚ أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ ٧٠

Has not the story reached them of those before them? - The people of Nuh (Noah), 'Ad, and Thamud, the people of Ibrahim (Abraham), the dwellers of Madyan (Midian) and the cities overthrown [i.e. the people to whom Lout (Lot) preached], to them came their Messengers with clear proofs. So it was not Allah Who wronged them, but they used to wrong themselves.

أَلَمْ يَأْتِهِمْ نَبَأُ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ

Has not the story reached them of those before them?

قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ

the people of Nuh (Noah), 'Ad, and Thamud,

وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

the people of Ibrahim (Abraham),

وَأَصْحَابِ مَدْيَنَ

the dwellers of Madyan (Midian)

وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَاتِ ۚ

and the cities overthrown [i.e. the people to whom Lout (Lot) preached],

أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ۖ

to them came their Messengers with clear proofs.

فَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ

So it was not Allah Who wronged them,

وَلَٰكِن كَانُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

but they used to wrong themselves.

وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ اللَّهُ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ٧١

The believers, men and women, are Auliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); they perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ

The believers, men and women,

بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ

are Auliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another,

يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ

they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do),

وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ

and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden);

وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ

they perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat)

وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ

and give the Zakat,

وَيُطِيعُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ

and obey Allah and His Messenger.

أُولَٰئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ اللَّهُ ۗ

Allah will have His Mercy on them.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَاكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ ۚ وَرِضْوَانٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ٧٢

Allah has promised to the believers -men and women, - Gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein forever, and beautiful mansions in Gardens of 'Adn (Eden Paradise). But the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allah. That is the supreme success.

وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Allah has promised to the believers - men and women,

جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ

Gardens under which rivers flow

خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا

to dwell therein forever,

وَمَسَاكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ ۚ

and beautiful mansions in Gardens of 'Adn (Eden Paradise).

وَرِضْوَانٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ

But the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allah.

ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

That is the supreme success.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ ٧٣

O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh against them, their abode is Hell, - and worst indeed is that destination.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ

O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)!

الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ

Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites,

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ

and be harsh against them,

جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئْسَ

their abode is Hell,

الْمَصِيرُ

and worst indeed is that destination.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا وَلَقَدْ قَالُوا كَلِمَةَ الْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِسْلَامِهِمْ وَهَمُّوا بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُوا ۚ وَمَا نَقَمُوا إِلَّا أَنْ أَغْنَاهُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ ۚ فَإِن يَتُوبُوا يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا يُعَذِّبْهُمُ اللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۚ وَمَا لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ ٧٤

They swear by Allah that they said nothing (bad), but really they said the word of disbelief, and they disbelieved after accepting Islam, and they resolved that (plot to murder Prophet Muhammad SAW) which they were unable to carry out, and they could not find any cause to do so except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them of His Bounty. If then they repent, it will be better for them, but if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful torment in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. And there is none for them on earth as a Wali (supporter, protector) or a helper.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا

They swear by Allah that they said nothing (bad),

وَلَقَدْ قَالُوا كَلِمَةَ الْكُفْرِ

but really they said the word of disbelief,

وَكَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِسْلَامِهِمْ

and they disbelieved after accepting Islam,

وَهَمُّوا بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُوا ۚ

and they resolved that (plot to murder Prophet Muhammad SAW) which they were unable to carry out,

وَمَا نَقَمُوا إِلَّا أَنْ أَغْنَاهُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ ۚ

and they could not find any cause to do so except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them of His Bounty.

فَإِن يَتُوبُوا يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ ۖ

If then they repent, it will be better for them,

وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا يُعَذِّبْهُمُ اللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا

but if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful torment

فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۚ

in this worldly life and in the Hereafter.

وَمَا لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ

And there is none for them on earth as a Wali (supporter, protector) or a helper.

۞ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِن فَضْلِهِ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ ٧٥

And of them are some who made a covenant with Allah (saying): "If He bestowed on us of His Bounty, we will verily, give Sadaqah (Zakat and voluntary charity in Allah's Cause) and will be certainly among those who are righteous."

۞ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ

And of them are some who made a covenant with Allah

لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِن فَضْلِهِ

(saying): 'If He bestowed on us of His Bounty

لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ

we will verily, give Sadaqah

وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

and will be certainly among those who are righteous.

فَلَمَّا آتَاهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ بَخِلُوا بِهِ وَتَوَلَّوا وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ ٧٦

Then when He gave them of His Bounty, they became niggardly [refused to pay the Sadaqah (Zakat or voluntary charity)], and turned away, averse.

فَلَمَّا آتَاهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ

Then when He gave them of His Bounty

بَخِلُوا بِهِ

they became niggardly [refused to pay the Sadaqah (Zakat or voluntary charity)]

وَتَوَلَّوا

and turned away

وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

averse

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُ بِمَا أَخْلَفُوا اللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ ٧٧

So He punished them by putting hypocrisy into their hearts till the Day whereon they shall meet Him, because they broke that (covenant with Allah) which they had promised Him and because they used to tell lies.

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ

So He punished them by putting hypocrisy into their hearts

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُ

till the Day whereon they shall meet Him

بِمَا أَخْلَفُوا اللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ

because they broke that (covenant with Allah) which they had promised Him

وَبِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ

and because they used to tell lies

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَاهُمْ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ ٧٨

Know they not that Allah knows their secret ideas, and their Najwa (secret counsels), and that Allah is the All-Knower of the unseen.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوا

Know they not

أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ

that Allah knows their secret ideas

وَنَجْوَاهُمْ

and their Najwa (secret counsels)

وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ

and that Allah is the All-Knower of the unseen

الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ٧٩

Those who defame such of the believers who give charity (in Allah's Cause) voluntarily, and those who could not find to give charity (in Allah's Cause) except what is available to them, so they mock at them (believers), Allah will throw back their mockery on them, and they shall have a painful torment.

الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ

Those who defame those who give charity voluntarily

مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ

from the believers in charity

وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ

and those who could not find to give charity except what is available to them

فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ

so they mock at them

سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ

Allah will throw back their mockery on them

وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

and they shall have a painful torment

اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ إِن تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَن يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ ٨٠

Whether you (O Muhammad SAW) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness for them … (and even) if you ask seventy times for their forgiveness … Allah will not forgive them, because they have disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW). And Allah guides not those people who are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ

Whether you (O Muhammad SAW) ask forgiveness for them

أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ

or ask not forgiveness for them

إِن تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً

and even if you ask seventy times for their forgiveness

فَلَن يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ

Allah will not forgive them

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۗ

because they have disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW)

وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ

And Allah guides not those people who are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)

فَرِحَ الْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَافَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَكَرِهُوا أَن يُجَاهِدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَقَالُوا لَا تَنفِرُوا فِي الْحَرِّ ۗ قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرًّا ۚ لَّوْ كَانُوا يَفْقَهُونَ ٨١

Those who stayed away (from Tabuk expedition) rejoiced in their staying behind the Messenger of Allah; they hated to strive and fight with their properties and their lives in the Cause of Allah, and they said: "March not forth in the heat." Say: "The Fire of Hell is more intense in heat", if only they could understand!

فَرِحَ الْمُخَلَّفُونَ

Those who stayed away

بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَافَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ

rejoiced in their staying behind the Messenger of Allah;

وَكَرِهُوا أَن يُجَاهِدُوا

they hated to strive and fight

بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

with their properties and their lives in the Cause of Allah,

وَقَالُوا لَا تَنفِرُوا فِي الْحَرِّ ۗ

and they said: 'March not forth in the heat.'

قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرًّا ۚ

Say: 'The Fire of Hell is more intense in heat',

لَّوْ كَانُوا يَفْقَهُونَ

if only they could understand!

فَلْيَضْحَكُوا قَلِيلًا وَلْيَبْكُوا كَثِيرًا جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ ٨٢

So let them laugh a little and (they will) cry much as a recompense of what they used to earn (by committing sins).

فَلْيَضْحَكُوا قَلِيلًا

So let them laugh a little

وَلْيَبْكُوا كَثِيرًا

and (they will) cry much

جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

as a recompense of what they used to earn (by committing sins)

فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ اللَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَائِفَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ فَاسْتَأْذَنُوكَ لِلْخُرُوجِ فَقُل لَّن تَخْرُجُوا مَعِيَ أَبَدًا وَلَن تُقَاتِلُوا مَعِيَ عَدُوًّا ۖ إِنَّكُمْ رَضِيتُم بِالْقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ فَاقْعُدُوا مَعَ الْخَالِفِينَ ٨٣

If Allah brings you back to a party of them (the hypocrites), and they ask your permission to go out (to fight), say: "Never shall you go out with me, nor fight an enemy with me; you agreed to sit inactive on the first occasion, then you sit (now) with those who lag behind."

فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ اللَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَائِفَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ

If Allah brings you back to a party of them (the hypocrites),

فَاسْتَأْذَنُوكَ لِلْخُرُوجِ

and they ask your permission to go out (to fight),

فَقُل

say:

لَّن تَخْرُجُوا مَعِيَ أَبَدًا

Never shall you go out with me,

وَلَن تُقَاتِلُوا مَعِيَ عَدُوًّا ۖ

nor fight an enemy with me;

إِنَّكُمْ رَضِيتُم بِالْقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ

you agreed to sit inactive on the first occasion,

فَاقْعُدُوا مَعَ الْخَالِفِينَ

then you sit (now) with those who lag behind.

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ ٨٤

And never (O Muhammad SAW) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were Fasiqun (rebellious, - disobedient to Allah and His Messenger SAW).

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا

And never (O Muhammad SAW) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies,

وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِ ۖ

nor stand at his grave.

إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ

Certainly they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger,

وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ

and died while they were Fasiqun (rebellious, - disobedient to Allah and His Messenger SAW).

وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَأَوْلَادُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَن يُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ ٨٥

And let not their wealth or their children amaze you. Allah's Plan is to punish them with these things in this world, and that their souls shall depart (die) while they are disbelievers.

وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَالُهُمْ

And let not their wealth amaze you.

وَأَوْلَادُهُمْ ۚ

or their children.

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ

Allah's Plan is to

أَن يُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِي الدُّنْيَا

punish them with these things in this world,

وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ

and that their souls shall depart (die)

وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ

while they are disbelievers.

وَإِذَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ أَنْ آمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَجَاهِدُوا مَعَ رَسُولِهِ اسْتَأْذَنَكَ أُولُو الطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالُوا ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ الْقَاعِدِينَ ٨٦

And when a Surah (chapter from the Quran) is revealed, enjoining them to believe in Allah and to strive hard and fight along with His Messenger, the wealthy among them ask your leave to exempt them (from Jihad) and say, "Leave us (behind), we would be with those who sit (at home)."

وَإِذَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ

And when a Surah (chapter from the Quran) is revealed,

أَنْ آمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَجَاهِدُوا مَعَ رَسُولِهِ

enjoining them to believe in Allah and to strive hard and fight along with His Messenger,

اسْتَأْذَنَكَ أُولُو الطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ

the wealthy among them ask your leave

وَقَالُوا ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ الْقَاعِدِينَ

to exempt them (from Jihad) and say, 'Leave us (behind), we would be with those who sit (at home).'

رَضُوا بِأَن يَكُونُوا مَعَ الْخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ ٨٧

They are content to be with those (the women) who sit behind (at home). Their hearts are sealed up (from all kinds of goodness and right guidance), so they understand not.

رَضُوا بِأَن يَكُونُوا مَعَ الْخَوَالِفِ

They are content to be with those (the women) who sit behind (at home).

وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ

Their hearts are sealed up (from all kinds of goodness and right guidance),

فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

so they understand not.

لَٰكِنِ الرَّسُولُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ جَاهَدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ وَأُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمُ الْخَيْرَاتُ ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ ٨٨

But the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) and those who believed with him (in Islamic Monotheism) strove hard and fought with their wealth and their lives (in Allah's Cause). Such are they for whom are the good things, and it is they who will be successful.

لَٰكِنِ الرَّسُولُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ

But the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) and those who believed with him

جَاهَدُوا بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ

strove hard and fought with their wealth and their lives

وَأُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمُ الْخَيْرَاتُ ۖ

Such are they for whom are the good things

وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

and it is they who will be successful

أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ٨٩

For them Allah has got ready Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.

أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ

For them Allah has got ready

جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ

Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow

خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ

to dwell therein forever

ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

That is the supreme success

وَجَاءَ الْمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ لِيُؤْذَنَ لَهُمْ وَقَعَدَ الَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ سَيُصِيبُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ٩٠

And those who made excuses from the bedouins came (to you, O Prophet SAW) asking your permission to exempt them (from the battle), and those who had lied to Allah and His Messenger sat at home (without asking the permission for it); a painful torment will seize those of them who disbelieve.

وَجَاءَ الْمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ

And those who made excuses from the bedouins came

لِيُؤْذَنَ لَهُمْ

asking your permission to exempt them

وَقَعَدَ الَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ

and those who had lied to Allah and His Messenger sat at home

سَيُصِيبُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

a painful torment will seize those of them who disbelieve

لَّيْسَ عَلَى الضُّعَفَاءِ وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرْضَىٰ وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۚ مَا عَلَى الْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ ۚ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٩١

There is no blame on those who are weak or ill or who find no resources to spend [in holy fighting (Jihad)], if they are sincere and true (in duty) to Allah and His Messenger. No ground (of complaint) can there be against the Muhsinun (good-doers - see the footnote of V. 9:120). And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

لَّيْسَ عَلَى الضُّعَفَاءِ

There is no blame on those who are weak

وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرْضَىٰ

or ill

وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ

or who find no resources to spend

حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۚ

if they are sincere and true (in duty) to Allah and His Messenger.

مَا عَلَى الْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ ۚ

No ground (of complaint) can there be against the Muhsinun (good-doers)

وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ إِذَا مَا أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَا أَجِدُ مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ تَوَلَّوا وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا يَجِدُوا مَا يُنفِقُونَ ٩٢

Nor (is there blame) on those who came to you to be provided with mounts, and when you said: "I can find no mounts for you," they turned back, while their eyes overflowing with tears of grief that they could not find anything to spend (for Jihad).

وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ إِذَا مَا أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ

Nor (is there blame) on those who came to you to be provided with mounts,

قُلْتَ لَا أَجِدُ مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ

and when you said: 'I can find no mounts for you,'

تَوَلَّوا وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا

they turned back, while their eyes overflowing with tears of grief

أَلَّا يَجِدُوا مَا يُنفِقُونَ

that they could not find anything to spend (for Jihad).

۞ إِنَّمَا السَّبِيلُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَسْتَأْذِنُونَكَ وَهُمْ أَغْنِيَاءُ ۚ رَضُوا بِأَن يَكُونُوا مَعَ الْخَوَالِفِ وَطَبَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٩٣

The ground (of complaint) is only against those who are rich, and yet ask exemption. They are content to be with (the women) who sit behind (at home) and Allah has sealed up their hearts (from all kinds of goodness and right guidance) so that they know not (what they are losing).

۞ إِنَّمَا السَّبِيلُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَسْتَأْذِنُونَكَ

The ground (of complaint) is only against those who ask exemption.

وَهُمْ أَغْنِيَاءُ ۚ

They are rich,

رَضُوا بِأَن يَكُونُوا مَعَ الْخَوَالِفِ

and yet are content to be with (the women) who sit behind (at home),

وَطَبَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ

and Allah has sealed up their hearts

فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

(from all kinds of goodness and right guidance) so that they know not (what they are losing).

يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ قُل لَّا تَعْتَذِرُوا لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكُمْ قَدْ نَبَّأَنَا اللَّهُ مِنْ أَخْبَارِكُمْ ۚ وَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ ٩٤

They (the hypocrites) will present their excuses to you (Muslims), when you return to them. Say (O Muhammad SAW) "Present no excuses, we shall not believe you. Allah has already informed us of the news concerning you. Allah and His Messenger will observe your deeds. In the end you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He (Allah) will inform you of what you used to do." [Tafsir At-Tabari]

يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ

They (the hypocrites) will present their excuses to you (Muslims), when you return to them.

قُل لَّا تَعْتَذِرُوا

Say (O Muhammad SAW) 'Present no excuses,

لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكُمْ

we shall not believe you.

قَدْ نَبَّأَنَا اللَّهُ مِنْ أَخْبَارِكُمْ ۚ

Allah has already informed us of the news concerning you.

وَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ

Allah and His Messenger will observe your deeds.

ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ

In the end you will be brought back to the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen,

فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

then He (Allah) will inform you of what you used to do.

سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ إِذَا انقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لِتُعْرِضُوا عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَأَعْرِضُوا عَنْهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ رِجْسٌ ۖ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ ٩٥

They will swear by Allah to you (Muslims) when you return to them, that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them. Surely, they are Rijsun [i.e. Najasun (impure) because of their evil deeds], and Hell is their dwelling place, - a recompense for that which they used to earn.

سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ

They will swear by Allah to you (Muslims)

إِذَا انقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ

when you return to them

لِتُعْرِضُوا عَنْهُمْ ۖ

that you may turn away from them

فَأَعْرِضُوا عَنْهُمْ ۖ

So turn away from them

إِنَّهُمْ رِجْسٌ ۖ

Surely, they are Rijsun [i.e. Najasun (impure)]

وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ

and Hell is their dwelling place

جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

- a recompense for that which they used to earn

يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْا عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَإِن تَرْضَوْا عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ الْقَوْمِ الْفَاسِقِينَ ٩٦

They (the hypocrites) swear to you (Muslims) that you may be pleased with them, but if you are pleased with them, certainly Allah is not pleased with the people who are Al-Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ

They (the hypocrites) swear to you (Muslims)

لِتَرْضَوْا عَنْهُمْ ۖ

that you may be pleased with them

فَإِن تَرْضَوْا عَنْهُمْ

but if you are pleased with them

فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ الْقَوْمِ الْفَاسِقِينَ

certainly Allah is not pleased with the people who are Al-Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah)

الْأَعْرَابُ أَشَدُّ كُفْرًا وَنِفَاقًا وَأَجْدَرُ أَلَّا يَعْلَمُوا حُدُودَ مَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ٩٧

The bedouins are the worst in disbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely to be in ignorance of the limits (Allah's Commandments and His Legal Laws, etc.) which Allah has revealed to His Messenger. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.

الْأَعْرَابُ

The bedouins

أَشَدُّ كُفْرًا وَنِفَاقًا

are the worst in disbelief and hypocrisy

وَأَجْدَرُ أَلَّا يَعْلَمُوا

and more likely to be in ignorance

حُدُودَ مَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ ۗ

of the limits (Allah's Commandments and His Legal Laws, etc.) which Allah has revealed to His Messenger

وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise

وَمِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ مَغْرَمًا وَيَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُ الدَّوَائِرَ ۚ عَلَيْهِمْ دَائِرَةُ السَّوْءِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ٩٨

And of the bedouins there are some who look upon what they spend (in Allah's Cause) as a fine and watch for calamities for you, on them be the calamity of evil. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

وَمِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ

And of the bedouins

مَن يَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ مَغْرَمًا

there are some who look upon what they spend (in Allah's Cause) as a fine

وَيَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُ الدَّوَائِرَ ۚ

and watch for calamities for you

عَلَيْهِمْ دَائِرَةُ السَّوْءِ ۗ

on them be the calamity of evil

وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower

وَمِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ قُرُبَاتٍ عِندَ اللَّهِ وَصَلَوَاتِ الرَّسُولِ ۚ أَلَا إِنَّهَا قُرْبَةٌ لَّهُمْ ۚ سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٩٩

And of the bedouins there are some who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and look upon what they spend in Allah's Cause as approaches to Allah, and a cause of receiving the Messenger's invocations. وَمِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ

there are some who believe in Allah and the Last Day

وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ قُرُبَاتٍ عِندَ اللَّهِ

and look upon what they spend in Allah's Cause as approaches to Allah

وَصَلَوَاتِ الرَّسُولِ ۚ

and a cause of receiving the Messenger's invocations

أَلَا إِنَّهَا قُرْبَةٌ لَّهُمْ ۚ

Indeed these (spendings in Allah's Cause) are an approach for them

سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ ۗ

Allah will admit them to His Mercy

إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Certainly Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful

وَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَانٍ رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي تَحْتَهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ١٠٠

And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). وَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ

And the first to embrace Islam

مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنصَارِ

of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun)

وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَانٍ

and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith)

رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ

Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him

وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي تَحْتَهَا الْأَنْهَارُ

He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise)

خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ۚ

to dwell therein forever

ذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

That is the supreme success

وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ الْأَعْرَابِ مُنَافِقُونَ ۖ وَمِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ ۖ مَرَدُوا عَلَى النِّفَاقِ لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْ ۖ نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِيمٍ ١٠١

And among the bedouins round about you, some are hypocrites, and so are some among the people of Al-Madinah, they exaggerate and persist in hypocrisy, you (O Muhammad SAW) know them not, We know them. We shall punish them twice, and thereafter they shall be brought back to a great (horrible) torment.

وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ الْأَعْرَابِ

And among the bedouins round about you,

مُنَافِقُونَ ۖ

some are hypocrites,

وَمِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ ۖ

and so are some among the people of Al-Madinah,

مَرَدُوا عَلَى النِّفَاقِ

they exaggerate and persist in hypocrisy,

لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْ ۖ

you (O Muhammad SAW) know them not,

نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ

We know them.

سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ

We shall punish them twice,

ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِيمٍ

and thereafter they shall be brought back to a great (horrible) torment.

وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ١٠٢

And (there are) others who have acknowledged their sins, they have mixed a deed that was righteous with another that was evil. Perhaps Allah will turn unto them in forgiveness. Surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

وَآخَرُونَ

And (there are) others who

اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ

have acknowledged their sins,

خَلَطُوا عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا

they have mixed a deed that was righteous with another that was evil.

عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

Perhaps Allah will turn unto them in forgiveness.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
