وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا ١

And by the sun and its brightness;

وَالشَّمْسِ

And by the sun

وَضُحَاهَا

and its brightness

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَاهَا ٢

And by the moon as it follows it (the sun);

وَالْقَمَرِ

And by the moon

إِذَا تَلَاهَا

as it follows it (the sun)

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا ٣

And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness;

وَالنَّهَارِ

And by the day

إِذَا جَلَّاهَا

as it shows up (the sun's) brightness

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا ٤

And by the night as it conceals it (the sun);

وَاللَّيْلِ

And by the night

إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا

as it conceals it (the sun)

وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا ٥

And by the heaven and Him Who built it;

وَالسَّمَاءِ

And by the heaven

وَمَا بَنَاهَا

and Him Who built it

وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا ٦

And by the earth and Him Who spread it,

وَالْأَرْضِ

And by the earth

وَمَا طَحَاهَا

and Him Who spread it

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا ٧

And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion;

وَنَفْسٍ

And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.)

وَمَا سَوَّاهَا

and Him Who perfected him in proportion

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا ٨

Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;

فَأَلْهَمَهَا

Then He showed her

فُجُورَهَا

what is wrong for her

وَتَقْوَاهَا

and what is right for her

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا ٩

Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ

Indeed he succeeds

مَن زَكَّاهَا

who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds)

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا ١٠

And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).

وَقَدْ خَابَ

And indeed he fails

مَن دَسَّاهَا

who corrupts his ownself

(i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered

by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism

or by following polytheism, etc.

or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds
