وَالْفَجْرِ ١
By the dawn;
- وَالْفَجْرِ
- By the name of Allah
- the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
- and by the dawn
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ٢
By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah).
- وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
- By the ten nights
وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ ٣
And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah).
- وَالشَّفْعِ
- And by the even
- وَالْوَتْرِ
- and the odd (of all the creations of Allah)
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ ٤
And by the night when it departs.
- وَاللَّيْلِ
- And by the night
- إِذَا يَسْرِ
- when it departs
هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ ٥
There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)!

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ ٦
Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)?

- بِعَادٍ

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ ٧
Who were very tall like lofty pillars,
- إِرَمَ

- very tall like lofty pillars
الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ ٨
The like of which were not created in the land?
- الَّتِي
- The like of which
- لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا
- were not created like it
- فِي الْبِلَادِ
- in the land
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ ٩
And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)?
- وَثَمُودَ
- And (with) Thamud (people)
- الَّذِينَ

- جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ
- cut (hewed) out rocks
- بِالْوَادِ
- in the valley (to make dwellings)
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ ١٠
And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)?
- وَفِرْعَوْنَ
- And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh)
- ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ
- who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)
الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ ١١
Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah).
- الَّذِينَ

- did transgress
- فِي الْبِلَادِ
- in the lands
- did transgress in the lands
- (in the disobedience of Allah)
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ ١٢
And made therein much mischief.

- الْفَسَادَ
- mischief
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ ١٣
So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment.
- فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ

- سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
- different kinds of severe torment
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ ١٤
Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them).
