فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ ١٥

As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me."

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ

As for man,

إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ

when his Lord tries him

فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ

by giving him honour and gifts,

فَيَقُولُ

then he says (puffed up):

رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ

"My Lord has honoured me."

وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ ١٦

But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!"

وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ

But when He tries him,

فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ

by straitening his means of life,

فَيَقُولُ

he says:

رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ

"My Lord has humiliated me!"

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ ١٧

Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)!

كَلَّا ۖ

Nay!

بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ

But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)!

وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ ١٨

And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)!

وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ

And urge not on

عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ

the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)

وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا ١٩

And you devour inheritance all with greed,

وَتَأْكُلُونَ

And you devour

التُّرَاثَ

inheritance

أَكْلًا لَّمًّا

all with greed

وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا ٢٠

And you love wealth with much love!

وَتُحِبُّونَ

And you love

الْمَالَ

wealth

حُبًّا جَمًّا

with much love
