وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ ٨

And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: "We believe in Allah and the Last Day" while in fact they believe not.

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ

And of mankind,

مَن يَقُولُ

there are some (hypocrites) who say:

آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ

"We believe in Allah and the Last Day"

وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

while in fact they believe not.

يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّا أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ ٩

They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!

يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ

They (think to) deceive Allah

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

and those who believe

وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّا أَنفُسَهُمْ

while they only deceive themselves

وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ

and perceive (it) not!

فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ ١٠

In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies.

فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ

In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy)

فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا ۖ

and Allah has increased their disease.

وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

A painful torment is theirs

بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ

because they used to tell lies.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ قَالُوا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ ١١

And when it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "We are only peacemakers."

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ

And when it is said to them

لَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ

Make not mischief on the earth

قَالُوا

they say

إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ

We are only peacemakers

أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدُونَ وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَشْعُرُونَ ١٢

Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.

أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدُونَ

Verily! They are the ones who make mischief

وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَشْعُرُونَ

but they perceive not

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا كَمَا آمَنَ النَّاسُ قَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ كَمَا آمَنَ السُّفَهَاءُ ۗ أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ السُّفَهَاءُ وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ ١٣

And when it is said to them (hypocrites): "Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad Peace be upon him, Al-Ansar and Al-Muhajirun) have believed," they say: "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Verily, they are the fools, but they know not.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ

And when it is said to them

آمِنُوا كَمَا آمَنَ النَّاسُ

Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad Peace be upon him, Al-Ansar and Al-Muhajirun) have believed

قَالُوا

they say

أَنُؤْمِنُ كَمَا آمَنَ السُّفَهَاءُ ۗ

Shall we believe as the fools have believed?

أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ السُّفَهَاءُ

Verily, they are the fools

وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

but they know not

وَإِذَا لَقُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قَالُوا آمَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا إِلَىٰ شَيَاطِينِهِمْ قَالُوا إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِئُونَ ١٤

And when they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe," but when they are alone with their Shayatin (devils - polytheists, hypocrites, etc.), they say: "Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking."

وَإِذَا لَقُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

And when they meet those who believe,

قَالُوا آمَنَّا

they say: 'We believe,'

وَإِذَا خَلَوْا إِلَىٰ شَيَاطِينِهِمْ

but when they are alone with their Shayatin (devils - polytheists, hypocrites, etc.),

قَالُوا إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ

they say: 'Truly, we are with you;'

إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِئُونَ

verily, we were but mocking.

اللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ ١٥

Allah mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doings to wander blindly.

اللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ

Allah mocks at them

وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ

and gives them increase in their wrong-doings

يَعْمَهُونَ

to wander blindly

أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرَوُا الضَّلَالَةَ بِالْهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَارَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ ١٦

These are they who have purchased error for guidance, so their commerce was profitless. And they were not guided.

أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ

These are they who

اشْتَرَوُا الضَّلَالَةَ بِالْهُدَىٰ

have purchased error for guidance

فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَارَتُهُمْ

so their commerce was profitless

وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ

And they were not guided

مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِي اسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًا فَلَمَّا أَضَاءَتْ مَا حَوْلَهُ ذَهَبَ اللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِي ظُلُمَاتٍ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ ١٧

Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.

مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِي اسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًا

Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire;

فَلَمَّا أَضَاءَتْ مَا حَوْلَهُ

then, when it lighted all around him,

ذَهَبَ اللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ

Allah took away their light

وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِي ظُلُمَاتٍ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ

and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.

صُمٌّ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ ١٨

They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they return not (to the Right Path).

صُمٌّ

They are deaf

بُكْمٌ

dumb

عُمْيٌ

and blind

فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ

so they return not (to the Right Path)

أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍ مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَاتٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِم مِّنَ الصَّوَاعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ مُحِيطٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ ١٩

Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers (i.e. Allah will gather them all together).

أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍ مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ

Or like a rainstorm from the sky,

فِيهِ ظُلُمَاتٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ

wherein is darkness, thunder, and lightning.

يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِم

They thrust their fingers in their ears

مِّنَ الصَّوَاعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ ۚ

to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death.

وَاللَّهُ مُحِيطٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ

But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers.

يَكَادُ الْبَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ أَبْصَارَهُمْ ۖ كُلَّمَا أَضَاءَ لَهُم مَّشَوْا فِيهِ وَإِذَا أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا ۚ وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ٢٠

The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things.

يَكَادُ الْبَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ أَبْصَارَهُمْ ۖ

The lightning almost snatches away their sight

كُلَّمَا أَضَاءَ لَهُم مَّشَوْا فِيهِ

whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein

وَإِذَا أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا ۚ

and when darkness covers them, they stand still

وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ ۚ

And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Certainly, Allah has power over all things
