وَقَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ ١٩٠

And fight in the Way of Allah those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors. [This Verse is the first one that was revealed in connection with Jihad, but it was supplemented by another (V. 9:36)].

وَقَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

And fight in the Way of Allah

الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ

those who fight you

وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا ۚ

but transgress not the limits

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ

Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors

وَاقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ وَأَخْرِجُوهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ أَخْرَجُوكُمْ ۚ وَالْفِتْنَةُ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ ۚ وَلَا تُقَاتِلُوهُمْ عِندَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ حَتَّىٰ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِيهِ ۖ فَإِن قَاتَلُوكُمْ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ جَزَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ ١٩١

And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah is worse than killing. And fight not with them at Al-Masjid-al-Haram (the sanctuary at Makkah), unless they (first) fight you there. But if they attack you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

وَاقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ

And kill them wherever you find them,

وَأَخْرِجُوهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ أَخْرَجُوكُمْ ۚ

and turn them out from where they have turned you out.

وَالْفِتْنَةُ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ ۚ

And Al-Fitnah is worse than killing.

وَلَا تُقَاتِلُوهُمْ عِندَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ

And fight not with them at Al-Masjid-al-Haram (the sanctuary at Makkah),

حَتَّىٰ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِيهِ ۖ

unless they (first) fight you there.

فَإِن قَاتَلُوكُمْ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ ۗ

But if they attack you, then kill them.

كَذَٰلِكَ جَزَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ

Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ١٩٢

But if they cease, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا

But if they cease

فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ

then Allah is

غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful

وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ لِلَّهِ ۖ فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا فَلَا عُدْوَانَ إِلَّا عَلَى الظَّالِمِينَ ١٩٣

And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone). But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun (the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)

وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ

And fight them until

لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ

there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah)

وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ لِلَّهِ ۖ

and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone).

فَإِنِ انتَهَوْا

But if they cease,

فَلَا عُدْوَانَ إِلَّا عَلَى الظَّالِمِينَ

let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun (the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)

الشَّهْرُ الْحَرَامُ بِالشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ وَالْحُرُمَاتُ قِصَاصٌ ۚ فَمَنِ اعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاعْتَدُوا عَلَيْهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا اعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُتَّقِينَ ١٩٤

The sacred month is for the sacred month, and for the prohibited things, there is the Law of Equality (Qisas). Then whoever transgresses the prohibition against you, you transgress likewise against him. And fear Allah, and know that Allah is with Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2).

الشَّهْرُ الْحَرَامُ بِالشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ

The sacred month is for the sacred month,

وَالْحُرُمَاتُ قِصَاصٌ ۚ

and for the prohibited things, there is the Law of Equality (Qisas).

فَمَنِ اعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ

Then whoever transgresses the prohibition against you,

فَاعْتَدُوا عَلَيْهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا اعْتَدَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ

you transgress likewise against him.

وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ

And fear Allah,

وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُتَّقِينَ

and know that Allah is with Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2).

وَأَنفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ ۛ وَأَحْسِنُوا ۛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ ١٩٥

And spend in the Cause of Allah (i.e. Jihad of all kinds, etc.) and do not throw yourselves into destruction (by not spending your wealth in the Cause of Allah), and do good. Truly, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good-doers).

وَأَنفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

And spend in the Cause of Allah

وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ ۛ

and do not throw yourselves into destruction

وَأَحْسِنُوا ۛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

(by not spending your wealth in the Cause of Allah)

and do good.

Truly, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good-doers)
