وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّاكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ ۗ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ ١٠

And surely, We gave you authority on the earth and appointed for you therein provisions (for your life). Little thanks do you give.

وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّاكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ

And surely, We gave you authority on the earth

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ ۗ

and appointed for you therein provisions (for your life)

قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ

Little thanks do you give

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَاكُمْ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ السَّاجِدِينَ ١١

And surely, We created you (your father Adam) and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being), then We told the angels, "Prostrate to Adam", and they prostrated, except Iblis (Satan), he refused to be of those who prostrate.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ

And surely, We created you (your father Adam)

ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَاكُمْ

and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being)

ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ

then We told the angels,

اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ

"Prostrate to Adam",

فَسَجَدُوا

and they prostrated,

إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ

except Iblis (Satan),

لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ السَّاجِدِينَ

he refused to be of those who prostrate.

قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ ١٢

(Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay."

قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ

Allah said: 'What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate,'

إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ

when I commanded you?'

قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ

Iblis said: 'I am better than him (Adam),

خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ

You created me from fire,

وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ

and him You created from clay.'

قَالَ فَاهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَاخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ ١٣

(Allah) said: "(O Iblis) get down from this (Paradise), it is not for you to be arrogant here. Get out, for you are of those humiliated and disgraced."

قَالَ

(Allah) said:

فَاهْبِطْ مِنْهَا

(O Iblis) get down from this (Paradise),

فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا

it is not for you to be arrogant here.

فَاخْرُجْ

Get out,

إِنَّكَ مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ

for you are of those humiliated and disgraced.

قَالَ أَنظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ ١٤

(Iblis) said: "Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)."

قَالَ

said

أَنظِرْنِي

Allow me respite

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ

till the Day

يُبْعَثُونَ

they are raised up (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)

قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنظَرِينَ ١٥

(Allah) said: "You are of those allowed respite."

قَالَ

Allah said:

إِنَّكَ

You are

مِنَ الْمُنظَرِينَ

of those allowed respite.

قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ١٦

(Iblis) said: "Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path.

قَالَ

Iblis said:

فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي

Because You have sent me astray,

لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ

surely I will sit in wait against them

صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

(human beings) on Your Straight Path.

ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَائِلِهِمْ ۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ ١٧

Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)."

ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم

Then I will come to them

مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ

from before them

وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ

and behind them

وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ

from their right

وَعَن شَمَائِلِهِمْ ۖ

and from their left

وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ

and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)

قَالَ اخْرُجْ مِنْهَا مَذْءُومًا مَّدْحُورًا ۖ لَّمَن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ ١٨

(Allah) said (to Iblis) "Get out from this (Paradise) disgraced and expelled. Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you, then surely I will fill Hell with you all."

قَالَ اخْرُجْ مِنْهَا

(Allah) said (to Iblis) 'Get out from this (Paradise)'

مَذْءُومًا مَّدْحُورًا ۖ

disgraced and expelled.

لَّمَن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ

Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you,

لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

then surely I will fill Hell with you all.

وَيَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ ١٩

"And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zalimun (unjust and wrong-doers)."

وَيَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ

And O Adam!

أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا

Dwell you and your wife in Paradise,

مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا

and eat thereof as you both wish,

تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا

but approach not this tree

مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

otherwise you both will be of the Zalimun (unjust and wrong-doers).

فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ لِيُبْدِيَ لَهُمَا مَا وُورِيَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْآتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَاكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّا أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ الْخَالِدِينَ ٢٠

Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals."

فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ

Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both

لِيُبْدِيَ لَهُمَا مَا وُورِيَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْآتِهِمَا

in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before)

وَقَالَ

he said:

مَا نَهَاكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ

"Your Lord did not forbid you this tree

إِلَّا أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ الْخَالِدِينَ

save you should become angels or become of the immortals.

وَقَاسَمَهُمَا إِنِّي لَكُمَا لَمِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ ٢١

And he [Shaitan (Satan)] swore by Allah to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both."

وَقَاسَمَهُمَا

And he [Shaitan (Satan)] swore by Allah to them both

إِنِّي لَكُمَا

Verily, I am for you both

لَمِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ

one of the sincere well-wishers

فَدَلَّاهُمَا بِغُرُورٍ ۚ فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا الشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْآتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِ ۖ وَنَادَاهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَن تِلْكُمَا الشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُل لَّكُمَا إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ ٢٢

So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?"

فَدَلَّاهُمَا بِغُرُورٍ ۚ

So he misled them with deception.

فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا الشَّجَرَةَ

Then when they tasted of the tree,

بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْآتُهُمَا

that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them

وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِ ۖ

and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame).

وَنَادَاهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا

And their Lord called out to them (saying):

أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَن تِلْكُمَا الشَّجَرَةِ

Did I not forbid you that tree

وَأَقُل لَّكُمَا إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ

and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?

قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ ٢٣

They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers."

قَالَا رَبَّنَا

They said: 'Our Lord!

ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا

We have wronged ourselves.

وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا

If You forgive us not,

وَتَرْحَمْنَا

and bestow not upon us Your Mercy,

لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

we shall certainly be of the losers.

قَالَ اهْبِطُوا بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَاعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ ٢٤

(Allah) said: "Get down, one of you an enemy to the other [i.e. Adam, Hawwa (Eve), and Shaitan (Satan), etc.]. On earth will be a dwelling-place for you and an enjoyment, - for a time."

قَالَ اهْبِطُوا

(Allah) said: 'Get down,

بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ

one of you an enemy to the other

وَلَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ

On earth will be

مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَاعٌ

a dwelling-place for you and an enjoyment,

إِلَىٰ حِينٍ

- for a time.'

قَالَ فِيهَا تَحْيَوْنَ وَفِيهَا تَمُوتُونَ وَمِنْهَا تُخْرَجُونَ ٢٥

He said: "Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (i.e. resurrected)."

قَالَ فِيهَا

Therein you shall live,

تَحْيَوْنَ وَفِيهَا

and therein you shall die,

تَمُوتُونَ وَمِنْهَا

and from it you shall be brought out (i.e. resurrected).
