إِذْ أَنتُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَىٰ وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَلَوْ تَوَاعَدتُّمْ لَاخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِي الْمِيعَادِ ۙ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَيَّ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ ۗ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ٤٢

(And remember) when you (the Muslim army) were on the near side of the valley, and they on the farther side, and the caravan on the ground lower than you. Even if you had made a mutual appointment to meet, you would certainly have failed in the appointment, but (you met) that Allah might accomplish a matter already ordained (in His Knowledge); so that those who were to be destroyed (for their rejecting the Faith) might be destroyed after a clear evidence, and those who were to live (i.e. believers) might live after a clear evidence. And surely, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

إِذْ أَنتُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا

(And remember) when you (the Muslim army) were on the near side of the valley,

وَهُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَىٰ

and they on the farther side,

وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ ۚ

and the caravan on the ground lower than you.

وَلَوْ تَوَاعَدتُّمْ لَاخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِي الْمِيعَادِ ۙ

Even if you had made a mutual appointment to meet, you would certainly have failed in the appointment,

وَلَٰكِن لِّيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا

but (you met) that Allah might accomplish a matter already ordained (in His Knowledge);

لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ

so that those who were to be destroyed (for their rejecting the Faith) might be destroyed after a clear evidence,

وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَيَّ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ ۗ

and those who were to live (i.e. believers) might live after a clear evidence.

وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And surely, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا ۖ وَلَوْ أَرَاكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا لَّفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ سَلَّمَ ۗ إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ ٤٣

(And remember) when Allah showed them to you as few in your (i.e. Muhammad's SAW) dream, if He had shown them to you as many, you would surely have been discouraged, and you would surely have disputed in making a decision. But Allah saved (you). Certainly, He is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts.

إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا ۖ

when Allah showed them to you as few in your (i.e. Muhammad's SAW) dream

وَلَوْ أَرَاكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا

if He had shown them to you as many

لَّفَشِلْتُمْ

you would surely have been discouraged

وَلَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ

and you would surely have disputed in making a decision

وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ سَلَّمَ ۗ

But Allah saved (you)

إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ

Certainly, He is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts

وَإِذْ يُرِيكُمُوهُمْ إِذِ الْتَقَيْتُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ قَلِيلًا وَيُقَلِّلُكُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِهِمْ لِيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا ۗ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُرْجَعُ الْأُمُورُ ٤٤

And (remember) when you met (the army of the disbelievers on the Day of the battle of Badr), He showed them to you as few in your eyes and He made you as few in their eyes, so that Allah might accomplish a matter already ordained (in His Knowledge), and to Allah return all matters (for decision).

وَإِذْ يُرِيكُمُوهُمْ

And (remember) when you met (the army of the disbelievers

إِذِ الْتَقَيْتُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ قَلِيلًا

on the Day of the battle of Badr), He showed them to you as few in your eyes

وَيُقَلِّلُكُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِهِمْ

and He made you as few in their eyes,

لِيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا ۗ

so that Allah might accomplish a matter already ordained (in His Knowledge),

وَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُرْجَعُ الْأُمُورُ

and to Allah return all matters (for decision).
