قُلْ أَرَأَيْتَكُمْ إِنْ أَتَاكُمْ عَذَابُ اللَّهِ أَوْ أَتَتْكُمُ السَّاعَةُ أَغَيْرَ اللَّهِ تَدْعُونَ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ٤٠

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Tell me if Allah's Torment comes upon you, or the Hour comes upon you, would you then call upon any one other than Allah? (Reply) if you are truthful!"

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتَكُمْ

Say (O Muhammad SAW): 'Tell me if

إِنْ أَتَاكُمْ عَذَابُ اللَّهِ

Allah's Torment comes upon you,

أَوْ أَتَتْكُمُ السَّاعَةُ

or the Hour comes upon you,

أَغَيْرَ اللَّهِ تَدْعُونَ

would you then call upon any one other than Allah?

إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ

(Reply) if you are truthful!

بَلْ إِيَّاهُ تَدْعُونَ فَيَكْشِفُ مَا تَدْعُونَ إِلَيْهِ إِن شَاءَ وَتَنسَوْنَ مَا تُشْرِكُونَ ٤١

Nay! To Him Alone you call, and, if He will, He would remove that (distress) for which you call upon Him, and you forget at that time whatever partners you joined with Him (in worship)!

بَلْ إِيَّاهُ تَدْعُونَ

Nay! To Him Alone you call,

فَيَكْشِفُ مَا تَدْعُونَ إِلَيْهِ إِن شَاءَ

and, if He will, He would remove that (distress) for which you call upon Him,

وَتَنسَوْنَ مَا تُشْرِكُونَ

and you forget at that time whatever partners you joined with Him (in worship)!

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَىٰ أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُم بِالْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ ٤٢

Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad SAW). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health with calamities so that they might believe with humility.

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَىٰ أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ

Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad SAW).

فَأَخَذْنَاهُم بِالْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ

And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health

لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ

with calamities so that they might believe with humility.

فَلَوْلَا إِذْ جَاءَهُم بَأْسُنَا تَضَرَّعُوا وَلَٰكِن قَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ ٤٣

When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do.

فَلَوْلَا إِذْ جَاءَهُم بَأْسُنَا

When Our Torment reached them

تَضَرَّعُوا

why then did they not believe with humility?

وَلَٰكِن قَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ

But their hearts became hardened

وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

and Shaitan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا مَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهِ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَابَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَرِحُوا بِمَا أُوتُوا أَخَذْنَاهُم بَغْتَةً فَإِذَا هُم مُّبْلِسُونَ ٤٤

So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them to punishment, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا مَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهِ

So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded,

فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَابَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ

We opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing,

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَرِحُوا بِمَا أُوتُوا

until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given,

أَخَذْنَاهُم بَغْتَةً

all of a sudden, We took them to punishment,

فَإِذَا هُم مُّبْلِسُونَ

and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.

فَقُطِعَ دَابِرُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا ۚ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ٤٥

So the roots of the people who did wrong were cut off. And all the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists).

فَقُطِعَ دَابِرُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا ۚ

So the roots of the people who did wrong were cut off.

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

And all the praises and thanks be to Allah,

رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists).

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ سَمْعَكُمْ وَأَبْصَارَكُمْ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُم مَّنْ إِلَٰهٌ غَيْرُ اللَّهِ يَأْتِيكُم بِهِ ۗ انظُرْ كَيْفَ نُصَرِّفُ الْآيَاتِ ثُمَّ هُمْ يَصْدِفُونَ ٤٦

Say (to the disbelievers): "Tell me, if Allah took away your hearing and your sight, and sealed up your hearts, who is there - an ilah (a god) other than Allah who could restore them to you?" See how variously We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), yet they turn aside.

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ

Say (to the disbelievers): 'Tell me,

إِنْ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ سَمْعَكُمْ وَأَبْصَارَكُمْ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُم

if Allah took away your hearing and your sight, and sealed up your hearts,

مَّنْ إِلَٰهٌ غَيْرُ اللَّهِ يَأْتِيكُم بِهِ ۗ

who is there - an ilah (a god) other than Allah who could restore them to you?'

انظُرْ كَيْفَ نُصَرِّفُ الْآيَاتِ

See how variously We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.),

ثُمَّ هُمْ يَصْدِفُونَ

yet they turn aside.

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتَكُمْ إِنْ أَتَاكُمْ عَذَابُ اللَّهِ بَغْتَةً أَوْ جَهْرَةً هَلْ يُهْلَكُ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الظَّالِمُونَ ٤٧

Say: "Tell me, if the punishment of Allah comes to you suddenly (during the night), or openly (during the day), will any be destroyed except the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing people)?"

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتَكُمْ

Say: 'Tell me,

إِنْ أَتَاكُمْ عَذَابُ اللَّهِ

if the punishment of Allah comes to you

بَغْتَةً أَوْ جَهْرَةً

suddenly (during the night), or openly (during the day),

هَلْ يُهْلَكُ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الظَّالِمُونَ

will any be destroyed except the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing people)?
