۞ وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ ١٧

And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)],

۞ وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ
And indeed We tried before them
قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ
Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people
وَجَاءَهُمْ
when there came to them
رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ
a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)]

أَنْ أَدُّوا إِلَيَّ عِبَادَ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ ١٨

Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust,

أَنْ أَدُّوا إِلَيَّ عِبَادَ اللَّهِ ۖ
Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel).
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust.

وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّي آتِيكُم بِسُلْطَانٍ مُّبِينٍ ١٩

"And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority.

وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ
And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah.
إِنِّي آتِيكُم بِسُلْطَانٍ مُّبِينٍ
Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority.

وَإِنِّي عُذْتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ ٢٠

"And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me).

وَإِنِّي عُذْتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمْ
And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord
أَن تَرْجُمُونِ
lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me)

وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا لِي فَاعْتَزِلُونِ ٢١

"But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone."

وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا لِي
But if you believe me not
فَاعْتَزِلُونِ
then keep away from me and leave me alone

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ أَنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُونَ ٢٢

(But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)."

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ
he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord
أَنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ قَوْمٌ
saying: 'These are indeed the people
مُّجْرِمُونَ
who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)

فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ٢٣

(Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued.

فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي لَيْلًا
Depart you with My slaves by night
إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ
Surely, you will be pursued

وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ ٢٤

"And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned."

وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ
And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided)
إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ
Verily, They are a host to be drowned

كَمْ تَرَكُوا مِن جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ ٢٥

How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left.

كَمْ تَرَكُوا
How many did they leave
مِن جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
of gardens and springs

وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ ٢٦

And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places,

وَزُرُوعٍ
And green crops
وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ
and goodly places

وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا فِيهَا فَاكِهِينَ ٢٧

And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight!

وَنَعْمَةٍ
And comforts
كَانُوا فِيهَا
of life wherein they
فَاكِهِينَ
used to take delight!

كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا قَوْمًا آخَرِينَ ٢٨

Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt).

كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ
Thus (it was)!
وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا
And We made ... inherit
قَوْمًا آخَرِينَ
... other people

فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنظَرِينَ ٢٩

And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite.

فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ
And the heavens wept not for them,
وَالْأَرْضُ
nor did the earth,
وَمَا كَانُوا مُنظَرِينَ
nor were they given a respite.

وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِينِ ٣٠

And indeed We saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment,

وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا
And indeed We saved
بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
the Children of Israel
مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِينِ
from the humiliating torment

مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ ٣١

From Fir'aun (Pharaoh); Verily! He was arrogant and was of the Musrifun (those who transgress beyond bound in spending and other things and commit great sins).

مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ
From Fir'aun (Pharaoh);
إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَالِيًا
Verily! He was arrogant
مِّنَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
and was of the Musrifun (those who transgress beyond bound in spending and other things and commit great sins).

وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ ٣٢

And We chose them (the Children of Israel) above the 'Alamin (mankind, and jinns) [during the time of Musa (Moses)] with knowledge,

وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ
And We chose them
عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ
with knowledge
عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ
above the 'Alamin (mankind, and jinns) [during the time of Musa (Moses)]

وَآتَيْنَاهُم مِّنَ الْآيَاتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَاءٌ مُّبِينٌ ٣٣

And granted them signs in which there was a plain trial.

وَآتَيْنَاهُم
And granted them
مِّنَ الْآيَاتِ
signs
مَا فِيهِ
in which there was
بَلَاءٌ مُّبِينٌ
a plain trial
